Cyprus competing with three athletes in Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

Cyprus is competing in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with three athletes, Cyprus National Paralympic Committee President Andreas Kamarlingos told CNA.

The three athletes that will take part in the Games, starting on 24th August are Antonis Aresti, track and field, Karolina Peledritou in swimming and Maria Markou in powerlifting.

Kamarlingos expressed hope that the Cyprus team will be successful at the Tokyo Games.

Marking fourty seven years since the Turkish army’s seizure of Varosha

As the sun was setting on the 15 August 1974, it felt as if time had stopped in Varosha. The Turkish army had invaded Famagusta and the once thriving luxury resort and commercial centre of Varosha, with its lavish hotels, built on golden sandy shores, visited even by Hollywood’s most popular stars at the time, now stood deserted.

Varosha was looted, sealed with barbed wire and put under the control of the Turkish army.

Red alert warning for risk of fire continues to be in effect on Monday

The Cyprus Forestry Department has announced that a “red alert” warning for risk of fire will continue to be in effect on Monday and is urging the public to refrain from activities that may cause fire.

A press release issued on Sunday urges whoever sees smoke or fire inside or near forests to contact the nearest Forest Station or call the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.

It notes that lighting a fire without a permit is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment, and that lighting a fire for cooking is only allowed in the specified areas at picnic sites.

Cyprus police fine 41 citizens and 8 establishment managers for breach of COVID-19 measures

Cyprus police conducted 6,105 checks during the last 24 hours and booked 41 citizens and 8 establishment managers for violating the measures aiming to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that the majority of fines were handed out to citizens because they were not using protective face masks and for visiting restaurants without a safepass.

Establishment managers were fined because they allowed clients to sit at tables without having a safepass, or they served clients at a bar, or because they allowed people to dance.

165 new COVID-19 cases detected in 14 thousand tests, no deaths reported

The Ministry of Health in Cyprus announced on Sunday 165 new coronavirus cases from 14 thousand tests and a positivity rate 0.74%. No deaths were reported.

The total number of the COVID-19 patients who have died is 456 and the number of confirmed cases stands at 108,872.

Moreover, 240 COVID-19 patients are being treated in hospital. Eighty-four are critical, while 82,09% of those who are hospitalized have not been vaccinated.

Three post-COVID patients who are not contagious any longer continue to be treated in hospital and are intubated, due to COVID in Intenstive Treatment Units.

A total of 14,008 tests were conducted using the PCR method (6,164) and antigen rapid tests (7,844).

Out of the 456 patients who have died 297 are men (65%) and 159 (35%) are women. Their median age is 77 years old.
