Cyprus firefighters and rescue teams assist in fire extinguishing in Evia

Cyprus firefighters and rescue teams which are in Greece for over a week battling the catastrophic blazes will be assisting the efforts to combat the fires in Evia today, Spokesperson of the Civil Defense Olivia Michaelides told the Cyprus News Agency.

She said that the night was extremely difficult as the teams helped in steep areas in Flambouri on Parnitha mountain in Attica region.

She explained that they had to do extreme trekking and mountain climbing to reach the areas on fire.

Police fine 32 citizens in a total of 4,096 checks for COVID violations

Police fined 32 citizens and 2 owners of establishments for violations of measures over COVID in a total of 4,096 checks the last 24 hours across the island.

An officer from the Press Office told the Cyprus News Agency that in Nicosia the Police carried out 1.752 checks and fined 4 citizens and 2 owners of establishments, in Limassol 11 citizens were fined in a total of 342 checks and in Larnaka 3 citizens were fined in 512 checks.

Three more COVID-19 patients die, 573 new cases announced on Tuesday

Three more COVID-19 patients have died, while 573 new cases were traced on Tuesday (positivity rate 0.92%) Cyprus Health Ministry has announced. The number of confirmed cases now stands at 107.001.

The individuals who have lost their lives are a sixty year old man who passed away on August 9 at the Intensive Treatment Unit of Nicosia General Hospital, a 37 year old woman who also died on August 9 at the Intensive Treatment Unit of Nicosia General Hospital and a 85 year old man who passed away at Limassol General Hospital.

Two hundred and sixty three COVID-19 patients are being treated in hospital. The situation of 87 of them is serious, while 87.55% of those hospitalized have not been vaccinated.

The total number of patients who have died is now 447 of whom 292 men (65%) and 155 women (35%). The median age of those who have passed away is 77 y

Cyprus close to 70% of fully vaccinated adults

Cyprus is close to reach the target of 70% in fully vaccinated adults as those who concluded their vaccination scheme up until yesterday amount to 68,5%, according to figures released by the Health Ministry on Tuesday.

The adults who got their 1st dose of the jab are 75,8% of the population.

The Ministry announced that in ages 16-17, 30,9% got their 1st dose of the vaccine and 19,3% are fully inoculated.

Total weight of goods transported by road decrease in first quarter

The total weight of goods transported by road decreased in the first three months of the year, the Statistical Service announced on Tuesday.

“During the period January-March 2021, the total weight of goods transported by road in Cyprus decreased by 0.5% compared to the corresponding period of 2020, while the weight of freight transported from and to Cyprus decreased by 11.3%”, Cystat said.

Enjoy your August holidays but with utmost caution, says Dr Karayiannis

Dr Petros Karayiannis member of the scientific committee on the pandemic on Tuesday urged people to continue to adhere with all the measures in place to contain COVID, pointing out that we need to follow all the rules and be cautious during the holidays.

In statements to the Cyprus News Agency Dr Karayiannis, who is a Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, expressed his worries as the upcoming August 15 holidays is a popular period for gatherings and advised people to be careful in overcrowded places.

He said that many people are on their annual leave during August and especially this week, therefore everyone needs to be careful adding that it is not unlikely that we could see a surge in cases during these days.
