President holds separate telephone conversations with leaders of Jordan and Greece and former Israeli PM

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has held separate telephone conversations with the leaders of Jordan and Greece and the former Prime Minister of Israel.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos, the President discussed with Jordan`s King Abdullah II about bilateral issues, regional cooperation and the forthcoming Cyprus-Greece-Jordan trilateral meeting to be held in Athens in the near future with the prospect of its enlargement, with the participation of other Arab states.

The President, Pelekanos says, also briefed Jordan`s King, who is in the United States,and will meet next week with US President Joe Biden, on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the ongoing Turkish illegal activities.

EU Commission green lights Cyprus €1.2 billion National Recovery and Resilience Plan

The European Commission gave the green light to Cyprus’ €1.2 billion National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the disbursement of which will begin this year and will complete in 2026.

Speaking during a joint press conference in the iconic library of the University of Cyprus, both European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as well as Cyprus President said the plan is ambitious and has a balanced mix of reforms and investments.

Cyprus House Price Index down 5.8% in Q1

Cyprus’ House Price Index (HPI) decreased 5.8% in the first quarter of 2021, according to preliminary estimate of the Statistical Service.

For the first quarter of 2021 the HPI amounts to 102.82 units. Compared both to the fourth and the first quarter of 2020, the HPI decreased by 5.8%.

This is the biggest decrease on a yearly basis since the first quarter of 2014.

HPI is a quarterly index which measures the change in the average prices of residential dwellings. It captures all types of residential properties, both new and existing. The land component of the residential property is included.

House prices up by 6.1% in the EU, down by 5.8% in Cyprus

_: In the first quarter of 2021, house prices, as measured by the House Price Index, rose by 5.8% in the euro area and by 6.1% in the EU, but decreased by 5.8% in Cyprus compared with the same quarter of the previous year, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

This is the highest annual increase for the euro area since the fourth quarter of 2006, and since the third quarter of 2007 for the EU. In the fourth quarter of 2020 house prices rose by 5.6%, 5.8% and 2.4% respectively.

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2020, house prices rose by 1.3% in the euro area, 1.7% in the EU and decreased in Cyprus by 5.8% in the first quarter of 2021.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in house prices in the first quarter of 2021 were recorded in Luxembourg (+17.

Registration of motor vehicles down 7.6% in June

?otal registrations of motor vehicles numbered 3,279 in June 2021, recording a decrease of 7.6% compared to June 2020. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 4.6% to 2,482.

According to a press release by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 6.3% to 18,631 in January-June 2021, from 17.525 in January-June 2020.

Passenger saloon cars increased to 14,267 from 13,508 in January-June 2020, recording a rise of 5.6%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 5,782 or 40.5% were new and 8,485 or 59.5% were used cars.

Coaches and buses registered in January-June 2021 decreased to 34, from 135 in the same period of 2020.

EU reiterates need for Turkey to respect international law and Cyprus’ sovereignty in letter to British Cypriots

A letter by an EU official on behalf of the President of the European Council, addressed to the Board of British Cypriots, has reiterated a call for Turkey to abide by international law and fully respect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

The letter is addressed to Marie Nicholsby, a member of the diaspora organisation, who had written to EU leaders with concerns about Turkey’s provocations.

The response by Brussels states that the EU shares the serious concerns over developments as regards the fenced-off area of Varosha.

European Commission leader to convey to EU need to establish a rescEU centre in Cyprus

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured that she will convey to the EU the need for a rescEU centre in Cyprus, something which will benefit the Republic of Cyprus and the countries in the region.

She was speaking after a meeting on Thursday with President Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace where he handed him the positive assessment of Cyprus` recovery and resilience plan, worth €1.2 billion in grants and loans under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

UK Foreign Minister reiterates support for Cyprus settlement “in line with UN parameters”

British Foreign Minister Wendy Morton has stated that “the UK continues to advocate a solution (in Cyprus) in line with UN parameters based on the model of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation.”

She was responding to Sir Roger Gale, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cyprus, who had sent a letter to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab stressing that the UK Government “must take every opportunity both publicly and privately to reiterate its support for the agreed basis for a solution.”

The Minister for the European Neighbourhood adds in her letter that this model “is internationally accepted and one that we believe to be broad enough to address the concerns of both sides.
