UNSG recommends renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate, expresses concern over developments in Varosha

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres recommended the renewal of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate for six more months, in his report on UNFICYP, while he also expresses concern over the Turkish actions in the Turkish occupied area of Varosha.

An informal copy of the UNSG`s UNFICYP report was handed out to the members of the UNSC, while his report on his Good Offices Mission on the Cyprus issue is expected to be handed over later on.

In his UNFICYP report, the UNSG says that in the light of the continued contribution of UNFICYP to peace and stability and to the creation of conditions conducive to a political settlement, I recommend that the Security Council extend the mandate of the mission for six months, until 31 January 2022.

Royal Caribbean Cruises looking at Cyprus as a potential destination

One of the Vice Presidents of the Royal Caribbean Cruises was in Cyprus to praise the authorities for their cooperation and express certainty that Cyprus is a potential destination for cruises.

Senior Vice President of Royal Caribbean International, Sean Treacy welcomed Health Minister Michalis Hadzipantelas and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios, as well as Deputy Minister of Shipping Vasilis Demetriades, Limassol Mayor Nikos Nikolaides and other officials aboard the Harmony of the Seas which is currently docked at Limassol Port.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) visited the cruise liner which is one of the largest in the world, the biggest being Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas.

Police conduct 2,777 checks, 40 persons fined

Police conducted a total of 2,777 checks in the last 24 hours for measures against COVID and fined 40 persons.

In Nicosia the Police made 776 checks and fined 14 citizens, in Limassol 491 and fined 15 citizens and in Larnaka 485 checks and no people were fined while in Paphos police reported four persons and one shop owner in a total of 440 checks.

In Famagusta 291 checks were carried out and the Police fined five citizens and one shop owner.

Scientific Committee to assess situation following COVID cases surge in Cyprus

Scientific Committee on the pandemic will convene Friday at 1900 local time to assess situation as Cyprus continues to report an increase in COVID cases reaching yesterday 993 new cases. The hospitalizations are also on the rise and the positivity rate stands at 2,03%.Yesterday the authorities reported that 107 patients are getting treatment in hospitals and 28 are in serious condition.

Cyprus today introduces new measures to curb the outbreaks in crowded places and citizens need to show a SafePass in outdoor places as well. The owners and/or managers of such places have the responsibility of ensuring all customers and visitors have a SafePass. The Police and Health Inspectors will continue to carry on their checks.

Cyprus reports Friday 882 new coronavirus cases, 117 people hospitalised

The Ministry of Health announced on Friday 882 new coronavirus cases (positivity rate 1.42%), while 117 people are in hospitals, 30 of whom in a serious condition.

No deaths were recorded and thus their number remains at 380, (254 men or 67%, and 126 women 33%). The median age of the deceased is 77,3.

Since the pandemic broke out there have been 82,463 infections in Cyprus.

Out of the 30 patients who are in a critical condition, 12 are intubated. In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 38 patients, 36 are in the Nicosia General Hospital, 39 in the Limassol General Hospital and 4 in the Makario Hospital in Nicosia.

The 882 new cases were found after 62,161 tests done with the PCR method (6,873) and the antigen rapid test method (55,288).

Cyprus aims to be a pillar of stability in the region, Defence Minister told the Economist conference

Cyprus aims to become a pillar of stability in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides said in a speech at the 25th Economist conference, held in Lagonisi, Greece.

Petrides participating in the panel on “Security Challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean”, underlined the importance of regional synergies in the effort to achieve conditions of peace and prosperity in the region.

Cypriot products reach new markets, President says at Cyprus Export Awards

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday that the government’s targeted policies and the initiatives undertaken by private businesses resulted in recent years in Cypriot products reaching new markets.

Addressing the 39th ceremony for the 2019 Cyprus Export Awards he said that product exports reached in 2020 the amount of €1.26 billion, recording a slight decrease of 3% from €1.

First Social Welfare Deputy Minister sworn in, pledges to work hard for a strong state of welfare for everyone

Cyprus’ First Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Anastasia Anthousi was sworn in on Friday, pledging to work hard so every citizen to live in dignity in a strong state of real welfare and to promote the government’s policies and strategies for the reforms needed.

Speaking during the sworn in ceremony at the Presidential Palace, President Nicos Anastasiades said that today`s ceremony and assumption of duties by the new Deputy Minister is another important milestone in the ambitious reform effort to upgrade the structures and operation of the state’s social services.

He referred in detail to the responsibilities of the new Deputy Minister, among others, the implementation of the Social Welfare Services Restructuring Plan, which was drawn up after a diverse social dialogue and the participation of the civil society and state officials.

Greek American leaders urge Biden to take action against Erdogan’s threats in Varosha

Ten presidents of Greek American organisations in a letter, express grave concern regarding the renewed threats currently facing Cyprus coming from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and urge US president Joe Biden to call upon the United Nations to enforce UN Security Council resolution 550 on Varosha.
