Government measures for fire stricken to be announced on Wednesday, competent Ministers say

Cyprus’ Interior Minister Nicos Nouris said on Tuesday that the government will announce within the next 24 hours measures to help the people affected by the devastating wildfires of last Saturday. He added that the Government’s goal was to reduce bureaucracy and the time needed, in order to provide immediate assistance.

In statements after the end of a regional meeting with the Minister of Agriculture Costas Kadis and representatives of the affected by the fire areas, Nouris said that all the services and all the Ministries of the government involved have the same goals, on the one hand, to support the people and on the other hand to rejuvenate and restore life in the affected areas.

Surge in covid cases alarming, Professor Karayiannis tells CNA

The situation with the continuous rise in covid cases in Cyprus is alarming and if we are not cautious the numbers will reach a thousand cases, Professor Petros Karayiannis has said.

In statements to Cyprus News Agency, Professor Karayiannis who is a member of the scientific advisory committee on the pandemic said that in order to avoid the worst case scenario, citizens and especially younger ages need to get vaccinated.

He pointed out that despite the advice by the scientists and all the urgent calls to be careful and follow the measures, we behave as if the pandemic is over.

Ashes and devastation all that’s left from fire that razed through Larnaca communities

Ashes and devastation have replaced the green mountains, homes and cultivations in Larnaca district villages where the fire swept through over the weekend, leaving behind it four deaths and destruction.

A large part of Larnaca mountainous areas, with scenic green routes providing a respite from the nearby cities, turned to a desolate black, smoky site with thick smoke that lingered on one’s skin.

As the Cyprus News Agency toured the burnt areas in the Larnaca district, it witnessed new and old traditional houses devoured by the fires, gardens that were gone and cars which only their frames survived the aftermath while electricity poles turned to dust.

Police conduct 2,392 checks for COVID measures, 1 shop owner and 35 citizens fined

Police carried out 2,392 checks during the last 24 hours for violations of measures against covid-19 during which 1 establishment owner and 35 citizens were fined.

In Nicosia the Police carried out 677 checks and fined 19 citizens while in Limassol 238 checks were made and the Police fined one establishment owner and 5 citizens.

In Larnaka the police conducted 349 checks with no fine and in Paphos 5 citizens were fined after a total of 344 checks.
