One dead and 577 new COVID-19 cases announced in Cyprus

Cyprus` Ministry of Health announced on Sunday one death and 577 new coronavirus cases with the positivity rate reaching 1.26%. A total of 71 patients are receiving treatment in state hospitals, 19 of whom in a serious condition.

A 93 year old woman passed away, the Ministry said, adding that since the outbreak of the pandemic 379 people have succumbed to COVID-19 (254 men or 67% and 125 women or 33%) and 78.022 have been infected with the virus in Cyprus.

The median age of the deceased is 77,3 years.

Out of the 19 people who are in a critical condition, nine are intubated.

In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 34 patients, 17 are in the Nicosia General Hospital, 16 in the Limassol General Hospital and four at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia.

EU Civil Protection Mechanism responded to Cyprus’ request on assistance, European Commission announced

The European Commission announced late on Sunday that Cyprus activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on 3 July 2021, requesting support to tackle forest fires in the Limassol district. The EU now deploys immediate assistance to help Cyprus contain devastating forest fires.

According to the Commission, responding immediately, the EU has rapidly mobilised rescEU aerial fire-fighting assets hosted by Greece and Italy.

Small resurgences dealt with, according to Fire Service as bodies found taken to hospital pending post mortems

Only small resurgences are still burning in the forest fires at communities of Limassol and Larnaca on Sunday evening, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, which, however, are being dealt with.

The huge forest blaze that started in the village of Arakapa of Limassol district on Saturday killed four people as it spread to communities in Larnaca district.

Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis told CNA that there are no active fire fronts, adding that there are resurgences which are being dealt with immediately.
