European Commission approves €100 mln grant for EuroAsia Interconnector as part of RRP

In a landmark decision, the Council of the European Union has approved the allocation of a €100 mln grant to the EuroAsia Interconnector electricity interconnection as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) for Cyprus to end the energy isolation of Cyprus, an announcement by the project promoter notes.

“The EuroAsia Interconnector electricity interconnection ends the energy isolation of Cyprus, the last non-interconnected EU member state, ensures security of supply, more competitive wholesale electricity prices and enables the increased use of electricity from cleaner sources, in particular renewables, by connecting the electricity network of Cyprus to the Union continental system,” the press release says.

Greece and Cyprus in full coordination to address Turkish actions in Varosha, Anastasiades and Mitsotakis say

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that Nicosia and Athens are in full coordination to address the illegal Turkish actions in Varosha.

During their joint statements after their meeting in Athens, on Tuesday, Anastasiades and Mitsotakis also reiterated both Greece’s and Cyprus’ readiness to participate in a resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus Problem, within the framework of the UN resolutions and the terms of the UN Secretary-General`s mandate.

President of the Republic of Cyprus said that the two countries’ response to Turkey`s efforts for the change of status in the fenced-off city of Varosha was at the center of his meeting with the Greek Prime Minister.

EU to consider actions in case of non-reversal of Turkey’s actions in Varosha says Borrell

European Council will consider actions at its next meeting in case of non-reversal of Turkey’s actions in Varosha, says EU High Representative Josep Borrell in a declaration on behalf of the European Union on the issue.

According to the declaration, the European Union strongly condemns Turkey’s unilateral steps and the unacceptable announcements made by the Turkish President and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on 20 July 2021 on the further reopening of the fenced-off town of Varosha.

“The EU welcomes the Statement made by the President of the UN Security Council on behalf of the Council on 23 July 2021, and in particular the Security Council’s condemnation and expression of deep regret about the unilateral actions in Varosha that run contrary to the Security Council’s previous resolutions and statements.
