As a 20year old is being treated for COVID-19, scientist says vaccinating children offers same risk & benefit

The youngest patient with COVID is 20 years old and is receiving treatment at the Reference Hospital, Scientific director of the General Hospitals of Larnaca – Famagusta, Amalia Hatzigianni, told CNA.

At the same time, Lecturer at European University Cyprus Zoi Dorothea Pana told CNA that the balance of benefit and risk from vaccinating 16-17 year-olds against COVID-19 with mRNA technology vaccines is very similar to that of adults.

According to Hatzigianni, 26 people are being treated for COVID, four are in the Increased Care Unit.

Daily Covid cases in Cyprus continued upward trend on Tuesday

Cyprus daily Covid infections continue rising for a fourth consecutive day on Tuesday with health Authorities announcing 332 new cases bringing the total tally of infections at 75,341.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health no fatality due to Covid was recorded for the 15th consecutive day, while total hospitalisations rose to 59, of which of which 20 in serious condition whereas six persons are intubated.

A total of 49,741 tests were carried out resulting in daily test positivity rate of 0.

Cyprus Meteorology Department issues new warning for extremely high temperature

Cyprus Meteorology Department has issued a new warning for extremly high temperature. It is valid from Monday, June 28, at 1800 local time, until Tuesday, June 29, at 1700. The awareness level is “yellow”.

As it is noted, night minimum temperature is not expected to be less than 26 degrees celsius over inland and coastal areas. Inland maximum temperature is expected to rise to around 41 degrees celsius and to 32 degrees over higher mountainous areas.

Society demands reforms, House President says in a meeting with expats students

Annita Demetriou, House of Representatives President on Tuesday received expats students of the American Hellenic Institute, stressing that the Cypriot society demands reforms and the tackling of challenges associated with various social groups and particularly youth and women,

A House of Representative press release writes that during the meeting, Demetriou criticised Turkish provocations, stressing the need for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem respecting the human rights of all Cypriots.

She also underlined the importance of consolidating peace in Cyprus especially for the future generations so they could prosper in conditions of security and stability.

Furthermore, the House President praised AHI’s substantive work and contribution and of AHIF to the aim of promoting Cyprus and the Cypriots just cause to the United States

President Anastasiades urges citizens to get vaccinated, incentives are being examined

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said the state will not proceed with new measures that will deprive people of their freedom, adding however that everyone must understand that vaccination is a national duty, and it is necessary for everyone to get vaccinated.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting on Monday afternoon with the scientific advisory committee in light of the increasing cases of COVID-19, he said that “young people should understand they are not immune and that being unvaccinated is not something to be proud of. Getting the vaccination is so to protect themselves.

Cyprus President and HIO discuss next steps for General Health Scheme

Cyprus President and the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) the organisation overseeing the functioning of the Cyprus General Health Scheme (GHS) discussed the HRI’s next steps.

The GHS which provides universal health coverage, came into force in June 2019 with outpatient healthcare, pharmacies and laboratories while in June 2020 the second phase was launched providing inpatient healthcare and other services by health professionals.

“Our joint assessment is that the GHS stands firm and it has been acknowledged by the Cypriot people as a whole,” HIO President Thomas Antoniou said in statements to the press following the meeting.

Government is not considering increased restrictions despite spike in infections, Health Minister says

The government has no intention to increase restrictions despite the spike in daily covid-19 infections and instead will proceed with targeted actions to make sure that social interaction will take place safely, outgoing Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou has said.

Furthermore, as younger persons are hesitant to receive vaccination, Ioannou said the government is considering providing incentives to encourage persons to use the EMA-licensed vaccines, adding that a Ministerial Committee has been established and will convene tomorrow to assess various suggestions while the final decisions are to be taken by the Council of Ministers.

Cyprus reports 314 new COVID cases, 54 people in hospitals, positivity rate at 0,84%

Cyprus Health Ministry, on Monday announced 314 new COVID cases from a total of 37,546 tests. Positivity rate rose to 0,84% and 54 people are in hospitals.

 

No death was recorded today and the total deaths so far are 378, of whom 254 are male (67%) and 124 female (33%) and their median age is 77 years.

 

The total cases since the pandemic broke out is 75,099.

 

From the 54 people in hospitals, 17 are in serious condition of whom 7 are intubated, 2 are in ICU and 8 in ACU.

 

From the 37,546 tests, 6,221 were PCR and 31,325 rapid and the positive cases were detected as follows:

 

28 from 368 samples taken from the contact tracing process, 9 from 4,115 tests at airports, 32 from 1,423 samples on private initiative, 16 from 304 samples at the Microbiological Labs of General Hospitals, 6 from 431 rapid tests done at private labs or

UNDP and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage make first site visit for new projects in Famagusta area

Joined by Jakhongir Khaydarov, the new Head of Office for UNDP in Cyprus, the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (TCCH) and UNDP conducted its first visit to the conservation sites in the Famagusta area within the framework of the “Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus” project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

 

During the visit, Khaydarov, members of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and UNDP, toured the Kampanopetra and the Agios Epiphanios basilicas in Salamis as well as the opus sectile floor of the Saint Barnabas basilica in the area. The group then visited improvement works at the Martinengo bastion courtyard, where a team of experts composed of archaeologists and conservators, made up of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, are beginning Phase III

Cyprus House President expresses concern over Turkish provocations against Cyprus and Greece

Cyprus House President, Annita Demetriou, expressed on Monday concern over the escalating Turkish provocations against Cyprus and Greece, underlining the direct connection of Turkey`s stance with its EU course.

 

Demetriou, who was speaking during a meeting she had with the Greek Ambassador in Nicosia, Theocharis Lalakos, also noted that the actions of the Turkish side which promote partition will not be accepted by the Greek Cypriot side.

 

According to a House press release, she stressed the significance of being firmly attached to legality and to principles that need to be present in a Cyprus settlement.
