Covid cases continue to rise, 787 announced Monday, one death and 88 patients in hospitals

COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Cyprus and the positivity rate stands now at 1,80%. The authorities on Monday announced 787 new cases and one death while 88 patients are getting treatment in hospitals.The total deaths are now 380 and the total cases since the pandemic broke out are 78,809.

From the 88 patients the 23 are in serious condition. The deceased is a female 69 years old who passed away at the American Medical Centre. She was transferred there from the ICU of the Nicosia General Hospital. The Health Ministry clarifies that the patient was not an active covid case as 21 days had passed since she caught the disease therefore she could be transferred at a private hospital. From the 380 deaths the 254 are male (67%), and 126 female (33%) and the median age is 77,3 years.

Greek Prime Minister holds phone conversation with Cyprus President regarding deadly fires

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades for the loss of four lives in the devasting blaze over the weekend and his sadness for the disaster caused by the fires.

Mitsotakis and Anastasiades had a telephone conversation early on Monday.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus thanked Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his immediate response to the request for assistance by sending two Canadair CL-415 aircraft to contribute in the efforts to fight the deadly blaze.

EP to discuss European Council outcome, Slovenian Presidency priorities, crackdown on opposition in Turkey

Cyprus President instructs opening of bank account in support of those affected by the fires

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has given instructions for an account to be opened in the Central Bank of Cyprus in which people can deposit their contribution in support of those affected by the fires over the weekend in Larnaca and Limassol districts, a Presidency press release says on Monday.

European Parliament President, David Sassoli, has expressed solidarity with Cyprus after the huge devastating fire in the country.

Opening on Monday the EP plenary session, which is taking place in Strasbourg, Sassoli said that “dear friends in Cyprus we will stand by your side.”

We must express our solidarity with the Cypriots, all the people of Cyprus, and the victims of this fire, which resulted in four deaths and huge destruction and pain, he noted.

EU – Copernicus: 3,134 hectares of burnt land in Cyprus

The EU satellite mapping service estimates the area burnt in Cyprus by Saturday`s fire in the Limassol area at 3,134 hectares.

Specifically, the data published by the Commission`s satellite mapping service via Copernicus satellite so far record 3134 hectares of burnt land, 347 burnt residential buildings, 2,366 hectares of forest and 2,482 hectares of agricultural land.

Household saving rate up to 21.5% in the euro area, EU current account surplus €116.5 bn

The household saving rate in the euro area was at 21.5% in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 19.5% in the fourth quarter of 2020. It is the second highest value since the beginning of the time series in 1999 (the highest was 25.0% in the second quarter of 2020). These data come from a first release of seasonally adjusted quarterly European sector accounts from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

At the same time, the household investment rate in the euro area increased from 9.1% to 9.2% in the first quarter of 2021, the highest value since 2011. In the first quarter of 2021, the business profit share increased from 40.8% to 41.2% in the euro area.
