No references that could create unrealistic expectations in UNSG’s draft Reports, Cyprus government says

The Cyprus government noted on Saturday that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, refrained from making any references in his draft Reports on his Good Officers Mission and the UN Peacekeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that could create unrealistic expectations, either to Turkey or the Turkish Cypriot leadership, as regards the pursued form of a Cyprus solution.

Moreover, Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, said, in a written statement, that the draft Reports will be evaluated by the government and if deemed necessary representations will be made.

Pelekanos said that the government became aware of the UN Secretary-General`s draft Reports, noting that they will be evaluated and if deemed necessary relevant representations will be made.

No tangible evidence of a change in Turkey’s behaviour, Greek FM says

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias expressed the view that despite the relative easing of tensions in the Aegean, there is no tangible evidence that Turkey has changed its behaviour and stance.

Speaking at the 25th Economist Conference in Lagonisi, Dendias noted that «although we are facing lower tensions, I regret to say that I have not seen tangible evidence of a change in Turkey`s behaviour and beliefs”. As he said, Turkey is not complying with international law and the international law of the sea.

Cyprus reports 960 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, 125 people are treated in hospital

Authorities in Cyprus reported 960 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday out of 69,310 tests carried out. The positivity rate stands at 1.39%. At the same time 125 patients with the disease are treated in hospital, 32 of whom in a serious condition.

No deaths were reported on Saturday, the Ministry of Health says in a press release, with the number of deaths remaining at 380, 254 or 67% men and 126 or 33% women. The median age of the deceased is 77.3. The total number of COVID-19 cases reported in Cyprus has reached 83,423.

In total, 125 patients are treated in hospitals across the island, 32 of whom in a serious condition; thirteen are intubated while another one is treated an ICU but is breathing without the help of a ventilator; eighteen people are treated in an increased care unit.

Vaccination of hotel employees will send tourists message of safety, Cyprus Health Minister says

The vaccination of hotel employees will send tourists a message of safety for Cyprus, Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas said on Saturday.

Hadjipantelas was speaking to the press during a visit at a hotel in Pafos where a mobile unit was carrying out vaccinations of the hotel’s employees.

He said that the government’s goal is to “deploy mobile vaccination units across Cyprus in order to give the opportunity to everyone, even people who are not able to go to vaccination centres, to be vaccinated.

UNSG says it is clear from UN resolutions that there is only one sovereign state in Cyprus

UN Secretary – General, Antonio Guterres, has urged the parties to engage constructively in the continuing consultations so that meaningful talks aiming to solve the Cyprus problem can again resume, stressing that the UN Security Council has made clear in numerous resolutions over nearly fifty years that there is only one sovereign state on the island of Cyprus.

Moreover, Guterres reiterated, in his good offices mission report, an unofficial copy of which was handed over on Friday to the UN Security Council members, his concern over developments in the fenced-off area of Famagusta (Varosha).

Temperature to reach 40 degrees Celsius in Cyprus on Sunday

Temperature will reach around 40 degrees Celsius in Cyprus on Sunday, the Department of Meteorology has said, issuing a yellow warning.

The warning is valid from midnight on Saturday until 16:00 hours on Sunday.

The minimum temperature inland on Saturday evening is expected to reach 26 degrees Celsius, it says.

On Sunday, it adds, maximum temperature at inland areas is expected to reach around 40 degrees Celsius.

Rules on crossings change due to deterioration of epidemiological situation in Cyprus

Rules as regards the crossings from the government-controlled to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus and vice versa change as of July 12th, due to the rise of the number of COVID-19 cases on the island.

According to a press statement issued by the UN in Cyprus on behalf of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Health, the Committee considers that in view of the epidemiological situation on the island, it is justified to invoke the emergency mechanism and move to level 3 (dark red) as of Monday 12th July at 10am.

The relevant rules for level 3 (dark red) will be as follows:

Non-vaccinated persons may cross with a 72hrs negative rapid test or PCR test (including unvaccinated workers and persons with health problems)

Fully vaccinated person with EMA approved vaccines as well as the Sinovac, Sinopharm or Sputnik vaccin

Cyprus police report 88 citizens and 7 establishment owners and employees for violating measures against COVID-19

Cyprus police reported 88 citizens and 7 establishment owners and employees, during the last 24 hours, for violating the measures aiming to curb the spread of COVID-19. A total of 5,019 checks were conducted island-wide.

A police spokesperson told CNA that individuals were handed out fines mostly for moving around without wearing protective face masks. Seven were booked for being in public establishments serving food and drinks without a Safepass. An establishment owner was also handed out a fine due to lack of a Safepass.

In Nicosia the police carried out 1,811 checks and booked 45 citizens and 2 establishment owners. In Limassol they conducted 705 checks and reported 19 citizens and 3 establishment owners. In Larnaca 2 citizens were booked after carrying out 233 checks. In Paphos the police conducted 671 checks and handed out fines to 8 citizens and 2 es
