All issues are being considered regarding the pandemic, said on Sunday Government Spokesman Marios Pelecanos.

Speaking from Pafos, he told reporters that some parameters need to be taken into consideration, for instance, the number of cases and where these cases come from.

“You must understand that several parameters are taken into consideration, such as the issue of age and most important, hospitalisations”, the Spokesman said.

I would like the UNSG to be more clear on the issue of Famagusta and in general, Cyprus President says

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has said that he would like the UN Secretary – General to be more clear as regards the issue of Turkish occupied Famagusta and in general.

In statements to the media, after the memorial service for the 13 victims of a huge blast at the naval base “Evangelos Florakis”, in Mari, ten years ago, and invited to comment on the draft report of the UN Secretary – General on Cyprus, Anastasiades said that what has been written down is being evaluated point by point, and any comments will be conveyed to the UN in the coming days.

Invited to comment to the UNSG`s reference to “equal inherent rights”, Anastasiades said that “it is well known that in the 11th of February 2014 Declaration and the Constitution of 1960 a form of inherent rights is being recognised for the people of Cyprus, either Turkish Cypriots or Greek Cypriots.

Steps to combat fires at meeting chaired by Cyprus President on Monday

Decisions for improving measures aiming at combating fires are expected to be taken during a meeting under Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, on Monday, with the participation of all relevant services.

Reliable sources have told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that during the meeting participants are expected to review actions that have been undertaken, discuss possible shortcomings and omissions and take decisions for improving the measures taken. Moreover the readiness of the services, the existing needs and the implementation of the measures taken to prevent and fight fires will be on the agenda.

Cyprus commemorates 13 victims of massive explosion in Mari 10 years after the tragedy

Cyprus commemorates and honours the 13 men who lost their lives 10 years ago, during a massive explosion at the naval base “Evangelos Florakis”, in Mari, on the southern coast.

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, as well as House President, Annita Demetriou are attending on Sunday morning the annual memorial service for the 13 heroes. The memorial service takes place at a church that was built at the site where the blast occurred.

Four Egyptians who died during fires in Cyprus buried on Sunday in Egypt

Four Egyptians who died during the huge fires that broke out in Cyprus during the previous weekend were buried on Sunday in Egypt.

Thousands of people gathered to the central Coptic church in Naseria village for their funerals. Egyptian authorities were represented by the governor of the region, while also MPs and other officials attended them. The Republic of Cyprus was represented by its Ambassador in Cairo Omiros Mavrommatis.

Archbishop of the local Coptic Church warmly thanked the Presidents of Egypt and Cyprus, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Nicos Anastasiades, for the solidarity they have expressed.

The bodies of the four men arrived on Saturday evening to the international airport of Cairo. Ambassador Mavrommatis and Ambassador Amr Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian assistant Foreign Minister for consular affairs were present at the airport.

Vaccination is the most important measure, scientist tells CNA

We must encourage vaccination and it is the most substantial measure that needs to be taken the soonest, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the University of Cyprus and member of the Advisory Committee for COVID-19 Maria Koliou told CNA.

She said the advisory committee, which convened via teleconference on Friday is really concerned about the increase due to the rising hospitalisations.

“We are really concerned over the increase which is taking place”, adding there “are many hospitalisations which seem to be increasing and eventually will put pressure on the health system”.

Cyprus authorities announce 849 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, 139 patients in hospital, no deaths recorded

Cyprus Health Ministry announced that 849 new COVID-19 cases were diagnosed on Sunday (positivity rate 1.33%) bringing the total number of cases to 84.272. The total number of COVID-19 patients being treated in hospital is 139, 34 of them in a critical condition.

No deaths of COVID-19 patients were recorded and therefore the total number of infected people who have died remains 380, 254 men (67%) and 126 women (33%). Their median age is 77.3 years old.

A total of 63,665 tests were carried out using the PCR method (5.614) and antigen rapid tests (58.051).

Out of the 34 patients whose condition is critical 13 are intubated, one is being treated in an Intensive Treatment Unit but is not intubated, and 20 in an Increased Care Unit.
