The EU should have a conditional dialogue with Turkey, says French Ambassador to MPs

The need for careful monitoring of Turkey`s actions in all activity areas was underlined by the French Ambassador to Cyprus Salina Grenet-Catalano, who participated in today`s meeting of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives in order to present the priorities of the French Presidency of the European Union.

In response to questions from members of the Committee regarding the stance of France and the EU towards Turkey`s problematic behaviour, Grenet-Catalano noted that a constructive and pragmatic dialogue with Turkey on issues such as climate change and the fight against terrorism should be pursued, however under clear conditions, such as respect for international law, adding that under the current circumstances the dialogue cannot be about Turkey`s accession to the European Union.

President satisfied with work on competitive electricity market

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is satisfied with the timetable as regards the opening of the competitive electricity market, set to operate in the Fall of 2022, according to a written statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Niovi Parisinou, following a meeting the President had Monday with Energy Minister, ?nergy System Operator Head, Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) Board and other officials.

During the meeting all participants agreed that works move ahead according to plan and it was pointed out that the government is determined to take all the necessary actions, so that there is a smooth opening of the electricity market for the benefit of consumers.

The project of installing the Management System of the Competitive Electricity Market is included in the Recovery and Sustainability Plan with a funding of 4.

Cyprus Health Ministry reports three deaths of COVID-19 patients and 2,546 new cases on Tuesday, 223 in hospital

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Tuesday the deaths of 3 COVID-19 patients and 2,546 new coronavirus cases, while 223 patients are treated in hospital, 71 of them in a critical condition. The positivity rate stands at 2.56%.

The total number of people who have lost their lives of COVID-19 is now 716, while the number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 241,319.

A percentage of 73.43% of the COVID-19 patients who are currently in hospital have not been vaccinated.

Moreover, 25 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious are still treated in a critical condition due to COVID-19 in an Intensive Treatment Unit and are intubated.

A total of 99,308 tests were carried out using the PCR method (6,465) and antigen rapid tests (92,843).

Health Ministry’s data shows that Omicron variant is dominant in Cyprus

New data on COVID-19 infections sequencing suggest that the Omicron variant is dominant among new infections, the Ministry of Health has said.

New data on infections sequencing on January 21 show that 165 from 192 samples checked or 86% were infections with the Omicron variant.

Of the 133 samples in the community from January 9 to January 16, 126 were infections with the Omicron variant which corresponds to 94.

Police book 20 individuals and nine businesses for violations of Covid-19 measures

Police booked 20 citizens and nine businesses during the past 24 hours following 1,848 checks in all districts as part of the measures against the spread of Covid-19.

 

The fines concerning the businesses were mostly for failure to check customers for SafePass or of their employees to present one.

 

A member of the Police press and communication unit, told CNA that two kiosks were fined €500 each during 379 checks in the Nicosia district, since employees did not have a SafePass.

Police and Social Welfare Services sign Memorandum of Cooperation on handling human trafficking victims

The Cyprus Police and the Social Welfare Services on Monday signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for the handling and protection of possible recognised victims of human trafficking, a move the two services said sends out a strong message for zero tolerance to this serious form of crime.

 

The Memorandum was signed by Minister of Justice and Public Order, Stephie Dracos, and Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Anastasia Anthousi.

 

According to a joint announcement, the Memorandum promotes the cooperation of the two Services.

Flights to Athens cancelled due to bad weather

Three flights of Aegean Airlines from Larnaka to Athens were cancelled, due to bad weather. Flights were scheduled for Monday evening at 2040 local time and Tuesday morning at 05.25 and 10.30.

 

Another flight from Athens to Larnaca, which was set to take off at 1535 today, left with a delay of an hour.

 

Aegean Airlines informs its passengers that if weather conditions permit, flights will take place Tuesday from noon onwards and that the flight program on Wednesday will be affected due to cancellations and change of times.

 

Passengers are advised to visit the company`s website at www.aegeanair.com as well as Olympic Air`s at www.olympicair.com for further information on cancellations and change of timetable. They can also change their tickets if they were due to travel today and tomorrow without rebooking fees.

Kasoulides and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister referred to country’s central regional role in joint statements

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah referred to the central role that the country can play in the region, speaking after a working breakfast hosted by Kasoulides, in Brussels, with the participation of the EU’s 27 Foreign Ministers and their Kuwaiti counterpart.

 

The EU’s and Kuwait’s Foreign Ministers exchanged views on regional challenges, EU – Kuwait relations and the enhancement of EU – Gulf Cooperation Council cooperation ahead of a ministerial summit in February.

 

Kasoulides thanked his counterpart for the presentation he gave to the ministers during the breakfast, and in which he underlined his country’s central role “not only geographically but at the centre of peace-making and peace understanding for the whole region”, adding that “the whole region is so important for the stabilit

No vaccination record for 80% of patients in Reference Hospital

Up to 80% of coronavirus patients who are hospitalised at Famagusta General Hospital, which also operates as a Reference Hospital, are without vaccination record, Amalia Hadjiyianni, the Scientific Director of the Larnaca – Famagusta Hospitals, told CNA.

 

She added that “currently 57 patients are hospitalised at Famagusta General Hospital, 16 of whom are in the Advanced Care Unit since they need closer monitoring. The average age of hospitalised patients is 66 years, the youngest patient being 31 years old and the oldest 93, both with no record of vaccination.

Cyprus records one new death and 2,815 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, hospitalisations at 221

Cypriot health authorities announced one new death due to COVID-19 and 2,815 new cases, with total deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic reaching 713 and 238,773 respectively.

 

Furthermore, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations amounted to 221, while patients treated in serious conditions in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units amounted to 75 from 76 the day before.

 

A total of 130,466 tests were carried out today, with the daily positivity rate amounting to 2.
