Alpine skier Yiannos Kouyoumdjian to represent Cyprus in Beijing Winter Olympic Games

Cyprus will be represented in the 24th Winter Olympic Games that will take place in Beijing on February 4 – 20, 2022, by 25 year old alpine skier Yiannos Kouyoumdjian.

Kouyoumdjian will compete in the slalom and the giant slalom. Vice President of the Cypriot Olympic Committee, Panagiotis Ioannides, will head the Cypriot delegation that will also comprise the General Secretary of the Committee, Andreas Georgiou, ski coach Milan Matic and Andreas Eleftheriou.

Ecompet Council proposes boosting Cyprus competitiveness through action in eight sectors

The Cyprus Economy and Competitiveness Council (Ecompet) proposed boosting Cyprus competitiveness through actions in eight sectors, stressing that the COVID pandemic highlighted the need to diversify the economy and boost resilience.

The Council issued its second competitiveness report which outlines the performance of the Cypriot economy regarding competitiveness utilising the methodology used by institutions such as the International Economic Forum’s Competitiveness Report and Doing Business Report of the World Bank. The report also compares more than 150 specialised indices while comparing Cyprus with 12 selected economies and the EU average.

Majority of COVID-19 patients in hospital are not vaccinated, Health Ministry says

Most patients with COVID-19 currently being treated in hospital are not vaccinated, according to the latest data by the Health Ministry.

On January 25, 78% of hospitalised COVID-19 patients were not vaccinated, the Ministry said.

According to the data, 3% of inpatients with COVID-19 are fully vaccinated, whereas for 10%, five-and-a-half months have passed since the date they received their second dose or the first one in the case they were vaccinated with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

The EU should have a conditional dialogue with Turkey, says French Ambassador to MPs

The need for careful monitoring of Turkey`s actions in all activity areas was underlined by the French Ambassador to Cyprus Salina Grenet-Catalano, who participated in today`s meeting of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives in order to present the priorities of the French Presidency of the European Union.

In response to questions from members of the Committee regarding the stance of France and the EU towards Turkey`s problematic behaviour, Grenet-Catalano noted that a constructive and pragmatic dialogue with Turkey on issues such as climate change and the fight against terrorism should be pursued, however under clear conditions, such as respect for international law, adding that under the current circumstances the dialogue cannot be about Turkey`s accession to the European Union.

President satisfied with work on competitive electricity market

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is satisfied with the timetable as regards the opening of the competitive electricity market, set to operate in the Fall of 2022, according to a written statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Niovi Parisinou, following a meeting the President had Monday with Energy Minister, ?nergy System Operator Head, Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) Board and other officials.

During the meeting all participants agreed that works move ahead according to plan and it was pointed out that the government is determined to take all the necessary actions, so that there is a smooth opening of the electricity market for the benefit of consumers.

The project of installing the Management System of the Competitive Electricity Market is included in the Recovery and Sustainability Plan with a funding of 4.

Cyprus Health Ministry reports three deaths of COVID-19 patients and 2,546 new cases on Tuesday, 223 in hospital

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Tuesday the deaths of 3 COVID-19 patients and 2,546 new coronavirus cases, while 223 patients are treated in hospital, 71 of them in a critical condition. The positivity rate stands at 2.56%.

The total number of people who have lost their lives of COVID-19 is now 716, while the number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 241,319.

A percentage of 73.43% of the COVID-19 patients who are currently in hospital have not been vaccinated.

Moreover, 25 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious are still treated in a critical condition due to COVID-19 in an Intensive Treatment Unit and are intubated.

A total of 99,308 tests were carried out using the PCR method (6,465) and antigen rapid tests (92,843).

Health Ministry’s data shows that Omicron variant is dominant in Cyprus

New data on COVID-19 infections sequencing suggest that the Omicron variant is dominant among new infections, the Ministry of Health has said.

New data on infections sequencing on January 21 show that 165 from 192 samples checked or 86% were infections with the Omicron variant.

Of the 133 samples in the community from January 9 to January 16, 126 were infections with the Omicron variant which corresponds to 94.
