People flock to the mountains as temperatures are below zero, cold front expected

With lower temperatures recorded on Sunday, more people are visiting the mountains during the weekend and the traffic is increased at Troodos Square and Mount Olympus, Troodos Station Manager Erodotos Panagides told CNA, adding that temperatures are below zero.

He said that police presence was increased around midday at the main roads leading to Troodos to help avoid traffic congestion at Troodos Square and Mount Olympus.

Police are directing the traffic at Prodromos – Troodos, Karvouna – Troodos and Platres – Troodos roads.

Ministry of Health changes vaccination planning to better serve the public

The Ministry of Health is changing the vaccination plan against COVID-19 from Monday, to better serve citizens.

In a press release, it said that from Monday, 17 January, people can be vaccinated with the vaccine of their choice at walk-in centres or through appointments at the Vaccination Portal.

It also said that it has increased the daily appointments at all vaccination centres.

UN Cyprus contributor meeting highlights importance of respecting buffer zone

The importance of respecting the UN buffer zone in Cyprus, emphasizing gender inclusion in all operations and work towards a mine-free Cyprus was highlighted during an UNFICYP contributor meeting.

UN Department of Peacekeeping operations in a post on Twitter today also welcomed Ireland’s almost 30-year contribution to UNFICYP.

“The @UN_Cyprus’ contributor meeting on Jan 12 “highlighted the importance of respecting buffer zone, emphasizing gender inclusion throughout ops and working towards a mine-free Cyprus,” the department said.

President Anastasiades begins a week of meetings to take action on Vasiliko, EAC, justice reform, natural gas

Safety in the wider region of Vasiliko area will be the main issue on the agenda during Monday’s meeting chaired by President Nicos Anastasiades.

The meeting is taking place following the fire at Vasiliko cement works on Tuesday which, according to a Presidency press release, has “caused legitimate concerns” and has stirred up communities in the region.

Taking part in the meeting will be Ministers of Transport, Communications and Works, Justice and Public Order, Energy, Commerce and Industry as well as ministry officials.

Shockwaves from the Tonga volcano eruption reach Cyprus, Chief meteorologist says

The shockwaves triggered by the undersea volcano eruption in Tonga in the Pacific, reached Cyprus, Kleanthis Nicolaides, Director of Department of Meteorology told CNA.

Speaking to CNA, Nicolaides said that at 22:00 Saturday, the Department’s observation systems in the airports of Larnaca and Pafos recorded an abrupt change in atmospheric pressure, which is under examination by the Department.

He said that at 22:00 local time Saturday atmospheric pressure from 1,011 units rose in a few minutes at 1,012.

Cyprus reports 6 deaths from COVID and 1,971 new cases, 270 patients in hospitals

The Health Ministry in Cyprus announced on Sunday 6 new deaths from COVID-19 and 1.970 new cases. Hospitalisations came to 270 and the positivity rate is down to 2.07%. Total deaths reached 681 and the number of cases since the pandemic broke out is now 225,738.

Of the 270 patients, 92 are in a serious condition and according to figures, 71.38%% of patients receiving hospital treatment are unvaccinated.

Moreover, the Ministry announced that 17 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in a serious condition in an ICU.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 95,005 tests (PCR and rapid).

The deceased are an 90 year old woman and an 82 year old man, who passed away at Limassol General Hospital, a woman aged 82 who died at the Famagusta Reference Hospital, as well as a man, aged 87 and two women, aged 87
