Six ICU beds to be immediately available at Larnaka General Hospital

Six beds will be immediately available in the Intensive Care Unit at the Larnaka General Hospital and if necessary another six will be made available for use, Minister of Health Michael Hadjipandelas said on Monday.

In statements after a meeting held at the Larnaka General Hospital the Minister said that “in the first phase, six ICU beds will be created at the Larnaka General Hospital, which the system so desperately needs, and then we will be able to make available six more, if necessary, under certain conditions.”

Cyprus reports 2 deaths from COVID and 5,024 new cases, 201 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Monday announced two deaths from COVID and 5,024 new cases. The hospitalizations are 201 and the positivity rate is now at 3,06%. The total deaths rose to 641 and of cases to 177,721. The Ministry announced that 75 patients are in serious condition and figures show that 81,1% of the patients are unvaccinated.

Moreover the Ministry said that 16 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious are in serious condition and intubated in an ICU. The new cases were detected from a total of 164,358 tests (rapid and PCR).

The deceased are a male 84 years old who passed away yesterday in Limassol General Hospital and a male 62 years old who died today in Nicosia General Hospital. Of the 641 deaths, 407 are male (63,5%),and 234 female (36,5%) and the media age is 76 years of age.

Economic sentiment in Cyprus up in December due to services, construction and industry

In December 2021, economic sentiment in Cyprus improved as the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI-CypERC) increased by 2.1 points compared with November 2021.

According to a University of Cyprus’ press release the increase in the ESI-CypERC resulted from stronger business confidence in services, construction and industry.

The increase in the Services Confidence Indicator was mainly driven by upward revisions in demand expectations.

The Retail Trade Confidence Indicator remained unchanged as the improved views on past and future sales were offset by a deterioration in the assessments of current stock levels.

The Construction Confidence Indicator improved slightly as a result of upward revisions in employment expectations, despite a deterioration in the assessments of the current levels of order books.

More than two thousand deportations in 2021, Cyprus Police spokesperson tells CNA

More than two thousand irregular migrants were deported from Cyprus to their countries of origin in 2021, Police spokesperson, Christos Andreou, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), noting that during the last two years the number of deportations has doubled.

According to Andreou, in 2018 695 deportations took place while in 2019 417. In 2020 1,272 deportations were carried out while in 2021 they reached 2,320.

Conservation and restoration works carried out in dozens of churches and mosques all over Cyprus

Conservation and restoration works are taking place or are scheduled to be carried out in dozens of churches and mosques all over Cyprus, by the bicommunal Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage while the works carried out in Salamina archaeological site that concluded by the end of November are described as a landmark project.

Member of the Committee, Sotos Ktoris, told CNA that the works in Salamina lasted for eight months. He noted that conservation workers and archaeologists from both sides worked for this project that concerned mosaics, all archaeological findings and the Basilicas of Saint Epiphanius and of Kampanopetra.

Nine children hospitalised with COVID, Doctor calls on parents to vaccinate their kids

Nine children are receiving treatment for COVID right now at Makario Children`s Hospital and Head of the Paediatric Ward says that this is the highest number of hospitalisations since the pandemic broke out. Dr. Avraam Elia called on parents once again to vaccinate their kids.

Dr. Elia told the Cyprus News Agency that the age of children who are receiving treatment ranges from one month to ten years old. Eight are under five.

He said that they are not in danger and the major symptom is fever. Dr. Elia said there is concern over the spread of the virus in the community which leads to kids becoming infected as well and those who are unvaccinated are the most vulnerable.

Member of scientific committee sees enormous COVID spread if schools reopen, hopes right decisions will be made

If schools reopen on January 10th there will be an enormous spread of COVID-19, Dr Petros Karayiannis, member of the scientific commitee on the pandemic told the Cyprus News Agency, expressing the hope that during tomorrow`s meeting with the Health Minister, the right decisions will be made.

Daily new coronavirus cases recorded in Cyprus in the last week have seen a huge spike. On Sunday, 3,538 new cases were reported with a positivity rate of 3.
