A total of 36 fines were given by the Police in the last 24 hours after 2,369 checks, for violation of COVID-19 measures which included 1,357 checks for safepass.

According to Police, 19 individuals and 17 establishment owners were fined with most fines concerning the non-use of protective masks while reports against establishment owners were due to managers and employees not carrying valid safepass, overcrowded premises and patrons dancing.

Fines ranged from 1,000-8,000 euros.

The balance by which we are keeping society open should not be disturbed, member of the advisory scientific committee of experts on COVID-19 and Pediatrics Lecturer at European University Cyprus Zoi Dorothea Pana has told CNA, adding that the discussion for possible relaxation of measures should take into account the fact that we are still amid a pandemic wave with consistently increased inpatient indicators in hospitals.

Pana told CNA that during the meeting of the advisory committee on Tuesday “we are at a point where we may need to review the protocols, the regular laboratory testing and generally the way in which Cyprus is functioning through the safety net that we need to have, given that we are still in a pandemic wave”.

Inoculations of children aged 5-11 reached 8.9% in Cyprus, Christina Yiannaki, the Health Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, said on Saturday after visiting a vaccination center in Nicosia. The Ministry, in cooperation with the Paediatric Society of Cyprus, is operating on specific dates walk-in vaccination centers, dedicated exclusively to children’s inoculations.

Until that moment, on Saturday, around 300 children had received the jab in Nicosia, said Yiannaki, adding that a similar center for children 5-11 will operate next Saturday in Limassol. Total inoculations of children for this particular age group are estimated at around 7,000, the Cyprus Pediatric Society Chairman, Michalis Anastasiades, said.

Yiannaki further noted that 74.7% of the total population received the first jab, 71.1% are fully vaccinated, while the percentage of those fully vaccinated

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades congratulated his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, on his re-election for a second term.

In a message on Twitter, President Anastasiades says he looks forward to working with Mattarella “to enhance even further our close cooperation as Mediterranean and EU partners on a bilateral, European and international level.”

Mattarella secured on Saturday a second mandate as President of the Italian Republic with 759 votes, out of total of 985.
