Value of bounced cheques rises slightly in 2021

The value of bounced cheques issued in 2021 rose to €0.93 million compared with €0.74 in 2020, whereas the number of bounced cheques dropped to 363 compared with 454 the year before.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus, the value of cheques issued in December 2021 and included in the CBC’s preliminary Central Information Register (CIR) jumped significantly to €250,506 more than doubling the value of bounced cheques issued in the previous month (€97,696) and more than quadruple the respective amount of December 2020 (51,2321).

A total of 99 legal persons and 95 natural persons were included in the preliminary CIR in 2021 compared with 147 and 129 respectively the year before, the CBC said.

Legal persons registered in the CIR in 2021 amounted to 58 from 66 in 2020, whereas registration of natural persons rose to 50 in 202

Cyprus’ foreign policy will remain unchanged, new Foreign Minister says

Ioannis Kasoulides took over on Tuesday the reins of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that Cyprus’ foreign policy will remain unchanged.

Kasoulides returns to the Foreign Ministry for the third time succeeding Nikos Christodoulides who has resigned, expressing his interest for the 2023 presidential elections.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along side Christodoulides, Kasoulides assured that he will continue on the path charted by his predecessor.

Cyprus House President sends a letter of condolence to the European Parliament over David Sassoli’s death

Cyprus House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou, has sent, on behalf of the members of the Cypriot Parliament, a letter of condolence to the Vice President of the European Parliament, Roberta Matsola, over the passing of the EP President, David Maria Sassoli.

According to a press release issued by the Cypriot Parliament, in her letter Demetriou states that Sassoli “has been a fervent supporter of the European ideals and served the European Parliament with integrity and selfless dedication guided by a sense of justice which was evident in his decisions and actions.”

She furthermore adds that Sassoli’s “steadfast focus in strengthening European solidarity, upholding the rule of law and promoting significant projects and reforms guided the European Parliament in making the necessary bold steps warranted by the challenging times we live in.

Rain and heavy thuderstorms expected to affect Cyprus on Wednesday

Prolonged rain and local heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect Cyprus on Wednesday, the Meteorology Department has said.

It has issued a yellow warning valid from 0600 to 2200 hours local time.

“Prolonged rain and local heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect the area at times,” it says.

The total precipitation, it adds, “is likely to exceed 55 millimetres per 24 hours.”

Cyprus records four new deaths and 3,515 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, hospitalisations at 252

Cypriot health authorities on Tuesday announced four new deaths due to COVID-19 and 3,515 new cases, with total deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic reaching 665 and 212,074 respectively.

Furthermore, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations rose to 252 while patients treated in serious conditions in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units declined to 76 from 86 the day before.

A total of 105,376 tests were carried out on Tuesday, with the daily positivity rate amounting to 3.
