Five deaths and more than 5,400 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday in Cyprus, 209 people hospitalised

Five people died due to COVID-19 while authorities in Cyprus announced 5,457 new cases, on Tuesday, marking a new record high in the country. Total infections since the outbreak of the pandemic rose to 183,178 and total deaths to 646.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations climbed to 209, from 201 yesterday, while patients treated in serious conditions in ICUs and ACUs rose to 76.

Nineteen Mediterranean monk seals in Cyprus, Fisheries Department urges people not to bother them

In total, nineteen Mediterranean monk seals, known as monachus monachus, have been located in Cyprus, while in the last few days 4 to 5 have been seen in Ayia Napa, Melina Marcou, an officer of the Fisheries Department has told CNA, urging people not to bother them during this crucial period of reproduction.

In statements to CNA, Marcou said that “this specific period is very important for the monacus monachus seal, since it is the period of its reproduction and it needs quiet.”

“It is important for people not to go to the area were the seals are and not to bother them,” she noted, adding that recently quite a few people have been observed going to the rocks or diving in the sea to photograph them and take videos.

Nicosia regrets the UN SG’s reports policy of ‘sitting on the fence’

Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos has told CNA that it is regrettable that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres maintains a policy of “sitting on the fence” in his reports on his Good Offices Mission and UNFICYP.

Invited to comment on the reports Pelekanos said that “we see that equidistance is maintained in the reports, possibly due to an effort by the SG to keep a window open so that the effort to resume dialogue can continue.”

It is regretful that the report “sits on the fence, since it would have been correct if facts were to be described exactly as they are.

Cyprus President pledges to work with French EU Presidency to further its “ambitious goals”

President Nicos Anastasiades says Cyprus will work with the French Presidency of the Council of the EU to help materialise its ambitious goals. The President of Cyprus also congratulates the Slovenian EU Presidency, which concluded its mandate.

In a message posted in Greek and French, on Twitter, the President wishes all the best to France on the occasion of assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Passengers arriving in Cyprus must have 48 hour PCR from Tuesday evening onwards

All passengers arriving in Cyprus airports by 2300 hours local time on Tuesday evening will have to show a 48 hour negative PCR test irrespective of whether they are vaccinated or not, Senior Manager Aviation Development, Marketing and Communication of Hermes Airports, Maria Kouroupi has told CNA.

The measure will be in effect today and it applies to all passengers over 12 years of age, she said.

Replying to a question, Kouroupi noted that it is not an unprecedented measure, adding that in the past two years everyone has had to learn to operate under such conditions.

Cabinet to finalise Wednesday decisions on new measures against COVID-19 after meeting of President with experts

New measures proposed by experts to curb the spread of COVID-19 were discussed on Tuesday evening, during a meeting at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia. The meeting chaired by the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, was attended by several senior government officials and members of the scientific advisory committee, ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where decisions are expected to be finalised.

According to a written announcement by Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos, the meeting was also attended by Ministers of Health, Finance, Education, Labour and Justice, the Deputy Minister of Innovation, the Government Spokesman, the Deputy Government Spokeswoman and other officials.
