Police book three business managers and 18 individuals for violations of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19

Police reported three business managers and eighteen individuals during the past 24 hours after 2,344 checks in all districts concerning the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that 524 checks were carried out in the Nicosia district during which three individuals and one business manager were fined.

In Limassol during 180 checks eight individuals were fined, while in Larnaca, one individual and one business manager were fined after 571 checks carried out in the district.

Meeting of EU Interior Ministers on Ukraine underway, Cyprus represented by Nouris

The meeting of the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council of the EU is underway in Brussels, focussing on the situation in Ukraine, the reception of refugees from the country as well as the provision of humanitarian aid.

In a tweet, Cypriot Foreign Minister Nicos Nouris said he is taking part “in a meeting of extraordinary Council of Interior Ministers of the EU in Brussels, focused on handling the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine”.

The world will never be the same after war in Ukraine, a stronger EU is necessary, Verhofstadt says

“The first reaction of everybody was never will the world after 9/11 be the same. I have exactly the same feeling today about this conflict” in Ukraine, MEP Guy Verhofstadt said, answering journalists’ questions, during the Conference on the Future of Europe, on Saturday in Dublin.

The former Belgian Prime Minister, who is the Cochair of the Executive Board of the Conference, believes that the EU needs further unification.

The last citizens’ panel of the Conference on the Future of Europe approved 48 of the 51 recommendations submitted

The last citizens’ panel of the Conference on the Future of Europe concluded on Sunday in Dublin with the approval of 48 recommendations.

The panel’s theme was entitled “Stronger economy, social justice, and jobs, education, culture, youth and sport, digital transformation”.

Citizens ended their meeting with 51 recommendations. Forty-eight of those were voted with a majority of more than 70%, thus going forward to the Plenary, which is going to take place early March, in Strasbourg.

The panel had five streams: Working in Europe, An economy for the future, A just society, Learning in Europe and An ethical and safe Digital Transformation.

Nouris: Cyprus supports mandatory resettlement from countries with Ukrainian refugees such as Poland

Cyprus conveyed the position that there should be mandatory resettlement of migrants from countries currently receiving large numbers of Ukrainian refugees, said Interior Minister Nicos Nouris after the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council held in Brussels on Sunday afternoon.

Nouris said that the EU’s Interior Ministers expressed their support to the sanctions being imposed on Russia, and also condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“In addition to the decisions of the past few days, the Council of Ministers of the Interior decided today to activate a specific EU directive that allows for temporary protection to Ukrainians wanting to move away from the country, while also expressing our support to those countries neighbouring Ukraine and receive the largest numbers of Ukrainian refugees today” he added.

Cyprus reports 2 deaths on Sunday from COVID-19, 1,387 new cases, 148 patients in hospitals

The Health Ministry in Cyprus announced on Sunday two deaths from COVID and 1,387 new cases. The Ministry said that 148 people are in hospitals and 61,49% of them are unvaccinated. Total deaths rose to 854 and cases to 320,160. The positivity rate is down to 1.49%.

The deceased are a 91-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman.

Of the 148 people in hospitals, 36 are in serious condition, one is in the ICU, 13 are intubated and 22 are in the ACU. Moreover, 24 patients who are no longer infectious are still intubated in an ICU.

On Sunday a total of 93,207 tests were carried out. Of them, 8,075 were PCR tests from which 165 positive cases were detected (positivity rate 2.04%). A total of 85,132 rapid tests were conducted and 1,222 cases were detected (PR 1.44%).
