Young Cypriot among Commonwealth Youth Awards 2022 finalists

A young Cypriot, Maria Kramvi, carrying out a scheme fostering peace and connection between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot children is among the finalists for this year`s Commonwealth Youth Awards.

As the co-founder of ‘Rhythm of Cyprus’, Maria runs an education programme which uses music as a peacebuilding tool to connect Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot children, and build sustainable communities based on inclusion and understanding. As the team lead of ‘Sistema Cyprus’, Maria also provides free music education to migrants, refugees and underprivileged children.

Hadjidemetriou praises harmonious collaboration at bicommunal Technical Committee in an intreview with CNA

Takis Hadjidemetriou, former Greek Cypriot head of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage said he approaches the island’s monuments with awe and modesty, adding that the key to harmonious collaboration was the knowledge of the truth.

In an interview with CN? on the occasion of his departure from the committee, Hadjidemetriou said the “cultural dimension of the destruction is huge and priceless. It is a major trauma in Cyprus’ historical journey”.

Commission sends Cyprus reasoned opinion on biodiversity, formal notice on flooding and EU budget

The European Commission is sending a reasoned opinion to Cyprus and another 14 member states calling them to implement provisions on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species.

The Commission’s regular package of infringement decisions for February 202, released on Wednesday, also includes two letters of formal notice sent to Cyprus, concerning the need to update flood risk maps and to transpose EU rules to fight fraud against the Union’s budget.

The package also includes references to two open infringement procedures against multiple member states, including Cyprus, due to the decision to send reasoned opinions to additional member states on EU rules to protect whistle-blowers and the European Arrest Warrant.

Deputy Minister of Tourism upbeat over tourist flows from Russia in 2022

Cyprus Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios said he received optimistic messages over this year’s tourist flows from Russia, the island’s second largest tourist market.

Perdios is visiting Moscow for the second time in just a few weeks to meet with Russian officials, following his contacts with air carriers and tour operators.

“There’s widespread optimism in the Russian market for trips abroad and especially for Cyprus, we have always been among the top preferences of the market but especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” Perdios told CNA, speaking from Moscow.

Cyprus President to attend the One Ocean Summit organized by the EU French Presidency

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, is traveling to Brest, France, to attend the One Ocean Summit at the invitation of French President Emanuel Macron. The Summit is ogranized under the umbrella of the EU French Presidency and EU leaders as well as leaders of third countries are going to participate.

An announcement released by the Presidency says that President Anastasiades will take part in the deliberations on Friday morning and will address the participants of a round table discussion titled ” An ocean of solutions for climate change”.

Cyprus government to report farmer’s harassment by Turkish military to the EU, Spokesman says

The Cyprus government will report to the EU an incident concerning a farmer’s harassment by the Turkish occupation forces in the village of Deneia, located in Nicosia District, within the buffer zone. Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos also said on Wednesday that the United Nations informed the Cyprus government that the incident will be included in a report on UNFICYP, the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus, present on the island since March 1964.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning, in Deneia, one of the four villages located within the buffer zone.

Cyprus records five deaths due to COVID and 2,779 new infections, hospitalisations at 199

Cypriot health authorities announced on Wednesday five new deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,779 new cases, bringing the total tally of deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic to 761 and 280,643 respectively.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalizations declined to 199, while patients treated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units amounted to 49 from 48 yesterday.

A total of 95,572 tests were carried out today, with the daily positivity rate rising to 2.
