Russia’s goal is to conquer Ukrainian territory, says the Ukrainian embassy in Cyprus

Russia has launched a “full-scale invasion” of Ukraine, the aim of which is to conquer Ukrainian territory and establish a regime loyal to Moscow, said the Embassy of Ukraine in Cyprus in a written statement on Thursday, February 24.

According to the statement, Russia`s actions constitute “an act of war, a gross violation of Ukraine`s sovereignty and territorial integrity, of the United Nations Charter and of the fundamental norms and principles of international law”.

It is noted that the Russian air force and artillery are shelling Ukrainian cities, military bases and command centres, while Russian troops have entered the Ukrainian territory from Belarus and occupied Crimea.

The Cyprus government`s vision is to transform the country into a model, resilient and inclusive nation, through a holistic growth plan, Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday, addressing a Cyprus Business Forum entitled “Cyprus: A gateway to the EU” at the EXPO 2020, in Dubai.

In his address, that was read by Finance Minister, Constantinos Petrides, the President also noted that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) “is an important political and economic partner for Cyprus. As we have showcased in the last months with our participation in the esteemed Dubai Expo, Cyprus has to offer numerous profitable investment opportunities in a variety of sectors,” he added.

Cyprus announces one death from COVID and 1.935 new cases, 167 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Thursday announced one death from COVID and 1,935 new cases. The Ministry said that 167 people are in hospitals and 59.29% of them are unvaccinated. Total deaths rose to 834 and of cases to 315,341. Positivity rate stands at 1.76%.

The deceased is a male 86 years old who passed away yesterday. Of the 167 people in hospitals, 37 are in serious condition, one is in an ICU breathing without a ventilator, 15 are intubate and 21 are in an ACU. Moreover 23 patients who are no longer infectious are still intubated in an ICU.

Today a total of 110.229 tests carried out, 7,085 were a PCR of which 289 positive cases were detected (positivity rate PR 4.08%).

A total of 103,144 rapid tests were conducted today and 1,646 cases were diagnosed (PR 1.6%).

CovScan Cyprus ready for new changes in Health Ministry’s protocol

Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation has concluded all changes needed in settings of CovScan Cyprus app in order to recognize the new protocol in place for categorization of establishments on the island, Health Ministry said Thursday, asking owners of these establishments to download the app and choose the category under which their place falls.

There are various categories of establishments according to their capacity, if they offer music etc and the app makes it easy for owners to know what are the prerequisites for people to enter. Everyone needs to show their safepass and an ID document.

Cyprus Police on high alert following Russian invasion in Ukraine

Cyprus Police are taking increased measures outside embassy buildings in Nicosia, following the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Police spokesperson Christos Andreou, told the Cyprus News Agency, adding that measures are being taken in other places in the capital. Nicosia but also island-wide.

He stressed however that the Police have not received any information for high risk or any other danger but patrolling outside embassies was decided to be more intense.

Government in full solidarity with Ukraine, bank account opened, collection of food and medical equipment

Commissioner for the Citizen announced Thursday that a bank account is opened for aid to Ukrainians, following instructions by the President of the Republic. In addition, a campaign for the collection of food and medical aid and equipment begins across the island.

The office of the Commissioner said that Cyprus stands in full solidarity with the people of Ukraine and in these times of hardship we must stand by their side.

Russia seeks to protect civilians and not to occupy Ukrainian territory, Russian Ambassador tells CNA

Russia`s plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories, but the protection of civilians and Russian citizens in Donetsk and Lugansk, Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Stanislav Osadchiy said in a statement to CNA on Thursday.

At the same time, with regard to the possible impact of the sanctions against Russia on Cyprus, he estimated that the volatility of the ruble in the foreign exchange market, provoked by the new package of sanctions, will significantly increase the cost of tourist packages denominated in euros, which may negatively affect the tourist traffic from Russia to Cyprus.

Osadchiy, who was responding to CNA questions on the issue said “Russia has been doing everything in the last eight years to ensure that the situation in Donbass is resolved peacefully within the framework of the Minsk agreements.
