Cyprus records five deaths due to COVID and 2,304 new infections, hospitalisations at 170

Cypriot health authorities announced on Friday five new deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,304 new cases, bringing the total tally of deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic to 819 and 302,661 respectively.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalizations rose to 170, while patients treated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units declined to 41 from 43 yesterday.

A total of 110,891 tests were carried out today, with the overall daily positivity rate declining to 2.

Workshops on public transport and reduction of emissions organized in Nicosia

A series of expert workshops on the future of public transport and the draft of a strategy for the reduction of gas emissions were organized in Nicosia between November 2021 -February 2022.

The workshops were organized by University College London (UCL), AECOM (a transport consulting company) and the Cyprus University of Technology.

A press release sent to Cyprus News Agency by the British High Commission, which supported the workshops, says that the initiative was taken based on the latest environmental statistics, published in Eurostat, according to which Cyprus, is the country with the 3rd smallest population in the European Union (EU), however has the third highest percentage of purchase of private vehicles (645 cars per 1000 inhabitants) and holds the sixth highest position in the EU emissions (> 10 tons “per capita emissions in 2019).

“The elimination of violence against women is an issue of high priority for the Republic of Cyprus,” said the President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou during an event held on Friday 18 February at the Embassy of Ireland in Nicosia.

Demetriou was speaking at the event organized by the Irish Embassy on the occasion of St Brigid’s Day, during which Irish diplomatic missions celebrate women`s creativity, leadership and talent in Ireland and around the world, and had as its central theme the prevention and response to gender-based violence.

Gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread and largely unpunished violations of human rights in the world, while awareness on violence against women and gender-based crimes have further increased over the last two years with the COVID pandemic, House President noted.

FM reiterates Cyprus’ principled position on Palestinian issue to Ambassador Attari

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, and Ambassador of Palestine to Cyprus, Abdallah Attari, discussed on Friday bilateral relations between Cyprus and Palestine, developments in the Middle East and the Cyprus problem.

According to a post of the Foreign Ministry on Twitter, Kasoulides reiterated Cyprus` principled position on the Palestinian issue.

It is also noted that during the meeting, that was productive, Kasoulides and Attari confirmed the ties of friendship and solidarity between the peoples of Cyprus and Palestine.

Relaxation of measures as of Monday, according to Health Minister’s decree

The relaxation of measures aiming to restrain COVID-19, comes into effect as of Monday, 21 February, according to the decree issued by Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela on Friday.

The relaxations include lifting the entry ban for those who have not completed their vaccination regime in restaurants, nightclubs, stadiums, theatre, cinema, weddings, christenings and hotels or tourist accommodations.

Entry is allowed by showing a SafePass in the form of a 24-hour rapid antigen test or a complete vaccination regime or a valid COVID-19 recovery certification.

Lavrov and Dendias discussed ‘security guarantees’, Cyprus and Ukraine in Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias discussed the situation in Ukraine, the broader developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region, the Aegean, the Cyprus problem, the situation in Syria, Libya and the Caucasus, as well as the promotion of ties between Greece and Russia, on Friday 18 February in Moscow.

This was the fifth face-to-face meeting between the two ministers amid dramatic developments in Ukraine.

Asked by a Russian news agency about the Cyprus issue, Dendias said that “I would very much like talks to resume on the Cyprus issue, but in what framework? In the framework of the UN Security Council decisions.
