Cyprus reports 7 deaths and 2,549 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Cyprus` Health Ministry announced on Wednesday seven deaths from COVID-19 and 2,549 new cases. At the same time patients in hospital are 175 of whom 43 are in a serious condition. The positivity rate stands at 2.61%.

The deceased are three men and four women. An 87 year-old man passed away on Monday, while a 59 year-old man and three women, aged 50, 85 and 92 died on Tuesday. A 63 year-old man and a woman 99 years of age passed away today.

Total deaths rose to 798 and total cases to 298,235.

Of the 43 patients who are receiving hospital treatment in a serious condition,13 are intubated in an ICU, one is being treated in an ICU but is breathing without the help of a ventilator and 29 are in an ACU. According to the Ministry 70.86% of patients in hospital are unvaccinated.

Larnaca’s Archaeological Museum reopens

Transport, Communications and Works Minister Yiannis Karousos described as significant the re-opening on Wednesday of the newly upgraded and renovated Archaeological Museum of Larnaca, closed for five years.

Speaking to the press during the opening ceremony, he said it is a significant day for the town and Larnaca district but also for the island’s cultural heritage. The Museum reoperates and has been renovated and upgraded completely offering visitors a unique experience, free admission and is open during the weekends.

Justice Minister and Frontex Executive Director discuss border security and migration

Minister of Justice and Public Order Stephie Dracos met on Wednesday with Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri, discussing issues of mutual interest concerning border security, irregular migration trends and cross-border crime.

A Ministry announcement says that the two sides affirmed their common approach in enhancing the protection of Cyprus’ external borders, which are essentially EU borders, through the support of Frontex members.

The Minister thanked Leggeri for his visit and for Frontex` overall support to Cyprus and appeared confident that their close cooperation will continue.

FRONTEX: Number of migrants arriving in Cyprus continued to grow in January 2022 compared to last year

The number of migrants and asylum seekers that arrived in Cyprus in January 2022 grew, according to the first estimates published by FRONTEX, the agency responsible for the EU’s external borders.

FRONTEX notes that in the first month of 2022 in Cyprus, there were 850 detections, 48% higher than last year.

The most represented nationalities were nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa), Syria and Nigeria.

President of Israel to visit Cyprus in early March, diplomatic sources tell CNA

The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, is scheduled to pay a visit to Cyprus on March 2, before he visits Turkey later in the month, diplomatic sources told CNA on Wednesday.

The 11th President of the State of Israel is also expected to visit Greece on February 24, prior to his visit to Nicosia, to meet with President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, on March 2.

According to Turkish media, President Herzog will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on March 9-10, in Turkey.
