Minister of Justice supports EU Commission’s proposal on Schengen reform

Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Stefi Drakou endorsed the European Commission’s proposal for the creation of specialised council that would monitor the Schengen area.

According an official press release, Drakou took part in the informal Justice and Home Affairs Council, hosted in Lille, France, that focused on the reform of the governance mechanism for the Schengen area.

During the discussion Drakou expressed support to the Commission’s proposal over the creation of specialised council that would monitor the Schengen area, giving the member-states the capacity to timely recognise possible oversights and take corrective measures safeguarding cooperation and effective response to challenges.

Police report 11 persons and 2 shop owners over COVID-19 protective measures violation

Cyprus Police fined 11 individuals and 2 shop owners for violating protective measures aiming to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time Saturday, the Force carried out a total of 1,751 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, the Police carried out 490 checks reporting 5 persons and 1 shop owner, in Limassol 108 checks were carried out with 3 persons fined, in Larnaca no reports were issued following 415 checks, in Pafos 2 persons and 1 shop owner were fined after 139 checks, in Famagusta 1 person was fined following 334 checks, while in the Morphou region no fines were issued following 132 checks.

Cyprus reports Saturday one new death and 2,568 COVID cases

Cyprus Health Ministry announced Saturday one death and 2.568 new COVID cases. The positivity rate stands at 2.95%.

At the same time, it announced that 225 COVID patients are treated in state hospitals and 65 are in serious condition. Of these 65 patients 29 are intubated, 4 are in an ICU and 32 and in an ACU.

Figures show that 73.34% of the patients are unvaccinated. The Ministry announced that 19 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in serious condition in an ICU.

Total deaths are now 741 and total cases rose to 269,391.

The death announced concerns a 94 -year-old woman who passed away at Limassol General Hospital. Of the 741 deaths, 462 are male (62.3%), 279 female (37.7%) and the median age is 76.2 years.

Cyprus aims to increase vaccinations against COVID to 75% of general population, MoH Permanent Secretary says

Cyprus aspires to boost vaccinations against Covid-19 to 75% of the general population, Christina Yiannaki the Ministry of Health’s Permanent Secretary has said, noting that so far vaccinations have reached to 84.4% of the adult population and 9.5% in children aged 5 – 11 years.

Yiannaki attended a vaccination event for adults and children aged 5 – 11 years organised in the Larnaca port, noting that two years after the outbreak of the pandemic still “some people in Larnaca are proceeding to vaccination centres for their first Covid jab.”

She said the Ministry will hold an additional event in Larnaca aiming to increase vaccinations among children which is considered beneficial for the public health.
