Double Taxation Agreement with Jordan will further develop economic relations, FinMin says

An Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income signed on Friday between Cyprus and Jordan, will contribute to further develop economic relations and enhance co-operation in tax matters between the two countries, the Finance Ministry has said in a press release.

The Treaty, the press release says, was signed by the Minister of Finance Constantinos Petrides on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and by the Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Al Safadi on behalf of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Cyprus continues progress in the fight against the financing of terrorism, State Department report says

Cyprus continued to make progress on strengthening the banking sector’s counterterrorism financing efforts, according to the State Department’s 2020 Country Report on Terrorism. Outlining major developments in the past year, the report notes, among others, that the Green Line provides a significant route for the illicit transit of people and narcotics. The termination of Cyprus’ citizenship-by-investment program will help prevent terrorists, and their sponsors and financiers, from buying an EU passport and the enhanced access to EU financial systems that comes with it, the State Department adds.

King Abdullah of Jordan to pay official visit to Cyprus

King Abdullah of Jordan arrives in Cyprus Friday afternoon for an official visit.

In Nicosia, King Abdullah will hold talks with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on the latest regional and international developments, and ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The visit will also be marked by the signing of two agreements and a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Jordan and Cyprus.

Turkey’s fait accompli policy ‘unacceptable’, Greek Foreign Minister says

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said Athens does not accept Turkey’s fait accompli and does not succumb to threats from the neighbouring country, while addressing a debate on the state budget in the Hellenic Parliament.

Referring to Greek-Turkish relations, the Cyprus problem, and the 2019 Turkish-Libyan memorandum over maritime zones, Dendias said that the tactic of “first breaking the law and then negotiating illegality for a legal exchange has come to an end”. “And this applies to Cyprus and to the Cyprus problem, where Turkey must return to the framework of a UN solution,” he stressed.

ECDC map: Epidemiological situation in Romania has improved, while most of Europe remains in deep red

The epidemiological situation regarding the spread of COVID-19 has improved significantly in Romania, while worsening in the rest of the European Union and European Economic Area, according to the latest epidemiological map on the spread of COVID-19 by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Romania stands out on the map as the situation there has improved for a second week, with most districts in the country passing from the red to the orange category.

North-eastern and south-western Romania, which were in the orange category last week, are now considered safe zones and are in the green category.

King of Jordan meets with President Anastasiades, Cyprus issue, bilateral ties, pandemic, migration crisis discussed

?ilateral relations, regional developments, Climate Change, efforts to combat covid-19 and the Cyprus issue were on the agenda of a meeting President Nicos Anastasiades had on Friday with the King of Jordan Abdullah II, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

Upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace, a military honorary guard presented honours and the national anthems of Cyprus and Jordan were performed.

Then the King of Jordan laid a wreath at the Monument of Archbishop Makarios III.

Omicron variant detected in 28 samples in Cyprus, Health Ministry announces

The Health Ministry in Cyprus announced on Friday that the Omicron variant was detected in 28 samples.

The cases were detected following a sequencing process by the Institute of Neurology and Genetics and NIPD lab as well as a thorough analysis of data by the Molecular Virology Lab of the University of Cyprus.

In particular eight cases confirmed as Omicron by the Institute of Neurology and Genetics and are contacts of the first 5 Omicron cases confirmed last week and had a travel background.

Cyprus reports one death from COVID and 695 new cases Friday, 171 hospitalisations

Cyprus Health Ministry reported on Friday one death from COVID, 695 new cases and 171 hospitalisations.

Total deaths rose to 617, total cases are now 144,205 and the positivity rate stands at 0.84% .

Figures show that 74.71% of the patients are unvaccinated. Eight post COVID patients who are no longer infectious are intubated and getting treatment in ICUs, a Health Ministry press release said.

A total of 82,410 tests were carried out today (rapid and PCR).

The deceased is a female 62 years of age who passed away at the ICU of Nicosia General Hospital. Of the 617 deaths 393 are male (63,7%) and 224 female (36,3%) and the median age is 75.8 years.

Ministry said that 57 patients are in serious condition or in an ACU of whom 20 are intubated, 1 is in an ICU and 36 in ACUs.
