Cyprus reports 2 deaths and 5,048 new COVID cases on New Year’s Eve, 180 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Friday announced 2 deaths from COVID and 5,048 new cases, breaking yet another record as cases on the island are on rise the past few days. The positivity rate is now at 2.98% . Total deaths rose to 638 and of cases to 166,827.

Moreover the Ministry announced that 180 patients are in hospitals, 79 of whom are in serious condition. Figures show that 85.48% of the patients are unvaccinated.

The Ministry also said that 18 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious are intubated in an ICU.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 169,476 tests.

The deceased are a male 76 years old who passed away at the ICU of Nicosia General Hospital and a female 78 years of age who died at the Reference Hospital in Famagusta.

Industrial output prices up annually by 19.2%, monthly by 5.8% in November

Industrial output prices in Cyrpus recorded an increase of 19.2% on an annual basis and 5.8% on a monthly basis this November, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat) on Friday, show, while the increase for the first eleven months of this year was 6.7% compared with the same period of the previous year.

In particular, the Index of Industrial Output Prices for November 2021 reached 118.8 units (base 2015=100), recording an increase of 5.8% compared to October 2021.

According to the figures released CyStat, compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the index recorded an increase of 19.2%.

For the period January-November 2021, the index showed an increase of 6.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2020.

Recent rainfall in Cyprus exceeds levels by 170-180% for December, Meteorological Office notes

The rain that fell in several areas in Cyprus, has exceeded 170-180% of the rainfall for the month if the cumulative amount is taken into consideration, Director of the Meteorological Service Kleanthis Nikolaidis told CNA on Friday.

He said that as the weather changed, the warning which the Meteorological Office had issued changed for 1700 on Thursday to 1600 on Friday from yellow to amber level.

It is expected, he said, that rain will continue locally in some areas, adding that in Troodos the rain did not stop throughout the day and night.

Cyprus President appeals for individual and collective responsibility in New Year message

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades appealed to all to show individual and collective responsibility, a sense of social solidarity, to follow the instructions of scientists, the vaccination program and to strictly adhere to the protection protocols.

In a televised message on the occasion of the New Year, President Anastasiades said the protection of life and the hope of safeguarding individual freedoms is a right as well as a duty of all of us.

On the Cyprus problem, President Anastasiades assured of his determination and persistence in finding a functional and viable solution, which will reunite our country and liberate it from the Turkish occupying army or any dependence on third countries.
