Police issue 14 fines for violation of COVID-19 measures

Police conducted 2,695 checks in the last 24 hours and issued 14 fines for violation of COVID-19 measures.

A police spokesperson told CN? that in Nicosia after 1,445 checks one individual was fined and two establishment owners while in Limassol, from 212 checks 2 citizens and 3 establishment owners were reported.

In Larnaca after 439 checks, one citizen was reported while in Paphos from 93 checks two establishment owners were fined.

The Cyprus Institute, Athens University and National Observatory of Athens sign MoU for tackling forest fires

The Cyprus Institute (CyI), the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), signed on Friday, December 10, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of joining forces for tackling forest fires and formulating integrated plans for the prevention and management of forest fires.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Director and Chairman of the Board of NOA, Professor Manolis Plionis, the Vice-Rector for Research and Education of NKUA, Professor Nikolaos Voulgaris, and The Cyprus Institute’s President, Professor Costas N. Papanicolas.

Conference speakers pledge to continue efforts to determine fate of Cyprus’ missing persons

A conference on the missing persons, under the title “Human Rights: The Social and Political Implications of the Non-Application of their Principles on the Humanitarian Issue of Missing Persons”, was held on Friday, December 10, in Athens, on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day.

The conference was co-organized by the Presidential Commissioner’s Office, the Panhellenic Committee of Parents and Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons of the Cyprus Tragedy, as well as the Pancyprian Organization of Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons.

The conference was under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Revamped Eleftheria Square, a reference point for Nicosia and Cyprus, inaugurated on Friday

“? necklace that surrounds the city”, “a bridge that unites the historic city with the modern urban and commercial center” and “a reference point for the whole of Cyprus” were some of the descriptions attributed to the revamped Eleftheria Square, Nicosia’s central square, inaugurated Friday night after years of work.

The project bears the signature of the architectural office of Zaha Hadid, with architect Christos Passas undertaking the supervision of the completion of the technical and construction works.

The center of Nicosia, from a place of withering, is once again becoming the peak of growth of the capital, said in his speech during the ceremony the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.

Weekend may be decisive in measures against COVID-19 in Cyprus due to Omicron cases, now increased to 5

This weekend will be decisive as far as the course of the measures against COVID-19 is concerned, as 500 students and members of the community in Limassol were called to take PCR tests after three students tested positive for the Omicron variant on Friday and another two on Saturday.

The possibility of variations in the measures already announced on 2 December cannot be ruled out, according to the Ministry of Health.

Health Ministry Spokesman, Constantinos Athanasiou said 500 students and citizens from the community were notified to take PCR test at the school where the three students who returned home from an overseas programme tested positive.

One death and 428 new COVID-19 cases traced on Saturday

Cyprus Ministry of Health reported Saturday one death and a total of 428 new COVID-19 cases, with the number of cases rising up to 140,458. The positivity rate stands at 0.55%.

Moreover, 145 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital, of whom 42 in a critical condition. A percentage of 79.32% of those hospitalised have not been vaccinated.

Five post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in a critical condition in an Intensive Treatment Unit, due to COVID, and are intubated.

A total of 78,007 tests were carried out using the PCR method (9,499) and antigen rapid tests (68,508).

Out of the 608 patients who have died in Cyprus since the beginning of the pandemic 389 are men (64%), and 219 are women (36%). Their median age is 75.8 years.
