Cyprus very important for the EU due to its position, French MP says

Due to its strategic position, Cyprus is “a very important country for the EU” regardless of its small size, Head of the France – Cyprus Friendship Group in the French National Assembly Nadia Essayan has said, noting at the same time that French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss the matters of human rights and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean during the French EU Council Presidency, taking also into consideration the problem created by Turkey.

A delegation of the Friendship Group is visiting Cyprus this week.

In statements after having had a meeting with the parliamentary committee of foreign affairs, on Tuesday and speaking through an interpreter, Essayan stressed that Cyprus “has a very important strategic position, which plays a bridging role between the EU and the Middle East”.

Cooperation on defence and security is expanded, Defence Minister says after Trilateral with Greece and Jordan

Cooperation in the fields of defence and security is further expanded, Cyprus Defence Minister, Charalambos Petrides said in a statement about the 1st Trilateral meeting among Cyprus, Greece and Jordan, at the level of Defence Minsters, that took place on Wednesday in Nicosia.

Petrides said that the three countries have long-standing and firm relations, created through their history and efforts for a better and safer future.

He added that he and his counterparts had the opportunity to discuss and exchange views related to the process of establishing and activating the trilateral mechanism on issues of defence and security, as well as ways of cooperation among the armed forces at the trilateral level.

Missing persons’ issue not impossible to solve, but cooperation with Turkish side is ‘not satisfactory’ LIBE Chair says

Solving the issue of missing persons in Cyprus is “not impossible” but cooperation with the Turkish side is “never satisfactory” Juan Fernando López Aguilar, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, (LIBE) said on Wednesday.

Addressing a group of journalists from Cyprus, the Spanish S&D MEP, who is also the standing rapporteur for the issue of missing persons in Cyprus, López Aguilar said that so much energy, EU money and EU skill has been put into solving this humanitarian problem, and yet there are so many people pending to be found.

There has been some progress, however there are families still waiting for their beloved ones, he added.

Relations between Cyprus and Israel are today stronger than ever before, Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday, during an event in Nicosia organized by the Embassy of Israel on the occasion of the Hanukkah Jewish celebration, during which Christodoulides and Israeli Ambassador Oren Anolik lit the candles on a menorah, an ancient Hebrew lampstand.

Addressing the event, Christodoulides noted that the partnership between Cyprus and Israel continues to grow and deepen, “and what better proof is there than the holding of already the 9th trilateral Summit with Israel, and Greece, that is scheduled to take place next week.”

New UNSG’s Special Representative arrives in Cyprus early next week

The UN Secretary General`s new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, arrives to the island early next week to assume his duties, as Elizabeth Spehar`s term of office as head of the UN mission in Cyprus ended on November 30th. Stewart will also perform the role of Deputy to the Secretary-General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned that the UNSG`s good offices mission in Cyprus has already requested the arrangement of several contacts which Stewart will have with officials and stakeholders on the island, after his arrival.

?hird dose COVID eligible citizens will be notified via SMS

Citizens who are eligible for the third dose of the covid vaccine will be notified via an sms, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The messages will be circulating as of today calling on citizens to book their appointment.

Citizens 70 and over have started getting these messages, the Ministry said.

People can be accommodated via an online booking at vaccination portal or by showing up at the walk in centres at specific days and time.

Cyprus reports the death of one COVID-19 patient and 492 new cases on Wednesday, 116 patients in hospital

Cyprus reported the death of a 60-year-old male patient and 492 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday with the positivity rate standing at 0.58%.

The total number of COVID-19 cases is now 134,965 and the number of deaths 598.

According to the Health Ministry, 116 patients are being treated in hospitals, of whom 47 in a critical condition. A percentage of 63.8% of those hospitalized have not been vaccinated.

Three post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated due to COVID-19 in a critical condition in an Intensive Treatment Unit and are intubated.

A total of 84,456 tests were carried out using the PCR method (8,260) and antigen rapid tests (76,196).

The death concerned a 60-year-old man who passed away after being treated in the ICU at Nicosia General Hospital.

GDP growth rate estimated at 5.5% in Q3 2021

The GDP growth rate in real terms during the third quarter of 2021 is positive and it is estimated at 5.5% over the corresponding quarter of 2020, according to Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat).

Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at 5.6%.

The positive GDP growth rate is mainly attributed to the sectors: “Hotels and Restaurants”, “Manufacturing”,” Transport, Storage and Communication”, “Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles”, “Arts, Entertainment and Recreation”, “Other Service Activities”.

Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade for September 2021 increases by 12.4%

The Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade Except of Motor Vehicles for September 2021 increased by 12.4% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, according to Cyprus Statistical Service.

For the same month, the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade increased by 7.7% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

For the period January-September 2021, the value index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 9.3% and the volume index an increase of 7.9% compared to the same period of 2020.
