More than 500 migrants on Wednesday began disembarking a rescue ship for health checks in Italy’s island of Sicily after nearly two weeks at sea, an NGO and the national news agency said. Italy’s interior ministry on Tuesday allowed the Geo Barents carrying 558 migrants to dock in the port of Augusta, the ship’s operator Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on its Twitter page. Cypriot government to continue supplying occupied north with electricity until Jan 4

The government will continue to supply the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus with electricity until 4th January 2022.

CNA has learned that a request was made on Wednesday after the previous agreement between the Republic and the occupied areas expired on Tuesday evening.

Between 30-35 megawatt of electricity was supplied daily from 23-28 December between 1600 and 2130 hours local time, considered as peak for electricity demand.

House President signs e-book of condolences for the late Greek President Papoulias

The former late President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias worked very hard for a solution of the Cyprus problem, said House President Annita Demetriou on Tuesday.

Signing the electronic book of condolences for Papoulias who passed away at the age of 92 on Boxing Day, Demetriou said that he worked to bring people together from all positions of responsibility he served, having the best interest of Hellenism as his sole aim.

She expressed her sincere condolences and on behalf of the House to the Greek state, his family and friends.

Central Bank statistics for November show increase in deposits, decrease in loans

Deposits in November in Cyprus have increased while loans decreased, according to statistics released on Wednesday by the Central Bank.

A press release referred to the MFIs deposits and loans statistics for the reference month of November 2021, which are included in the December 2021 edition of Monetary and Financial Statistics.

According to the data, total deposits in November 2021 recorded a net increase of €480.

The pandemic concerns everyone, says Health Minister as Cabinet decides new measures

The pandemic concerns everyone and with more than three thousand cases per day in our small population, it means COVID is threatening each and every one of us, said Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela announcing the new measures decided in an extraordinary session of the cabinet on Wednesday evening.

The epidemiological indicators in the last days present a rapid deterioration with the possibility that hospitalisations will increase in state hospitals in the next few days, the Minister told reporters after his ministry announced that new infections shot to 3002 on Wednesday, surpassing every record since COVID appeared.

The minister said the positivity rate is above 2.

Health Ministry to begin vaccinating children aged 5-11 at vaccination centres

The Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Cyprus Pediatric Society, will start vaccinating children aged 5-11 from January 2 at the vaccination centres.

A Health Ministry press release said the decision was taken in an effort to better serve parents/guardians of the children.

It said that from January 2, 2022, the vaccination centre at the State Fair – point A` will serve only children aged 5-11 years (walk-in and appointment through the vaccination portal) from 08:00 to 14:00.

New COVID-19 cases surpass 3,000, five deaths reported, Health Ministry annnounces

An unprecedented 3002 new COVID-19 infections and five deaths were announced by Health authorities in Cyprus on Wednesday. Total infections now stand at 157.928 while the number of deaths recorded in Cyprus since the outbreak of the pandemic increased to 635.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations amounted to 174 while patients treated in serious conditions in ICUs and ACUs remain at 84.

Total tests carried out on Wednesday amounted to 118.894 with the daily positivity rate rising to 2.52%.

The five deaths are a woman, aged 74 who passed away at Famagusta General Hospital, another woman aged 77 who died in Limassol General Hospital, and a 94-year-old woman who passed away at home. Two men, one aged 87 passed away at Paphos General Hospital and another aged 81 at Nicosia General Hospital.
