German health minister warns of Omicron wave as first death recorded

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach expects a large wave of the more contagious coronavirus variant Omicron in Germany at the turn of the year. His warning came after the first death from the variant was recorded in Germany. The person who died was aged between 60 and 79, according to the nation’s disease control body. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that the number of Omicron cases had risen by a quarter in a day, up 810 to 3,198. More slots allocated by Health Ministry for children’s COVID-19 vaccinations

The Ministry of Health has increased the vaccination slots for children 5-11, noting that appointments can only be arranged through the Vaccination portal.

The same centres will also be available for persons aged 12 and over after appointments arranged through the vaccination portal for the booster shot with Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech. The Walk-in centres are only open for second dose vaccinations of Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech, provided that the first dose took place at the same centre.

Cyprus commits to contribute nearly €6 mln to the IDA Replenishment Package

Cyprus has announced its commitment to contribute €5.77 mln as a donor country, in the context of the remote meetings held on 14 and 15 December for the $93 billion replenishment package of the International Development Association (IDA) to help low-income countries respond to the COVID-19 crisis and build a greener, more resilient, and inclusive future.

Eurostat: Full time researchers increased by 67% in Cyprus since 2010

The number of full-time researchers in Cyprus increased by 67% over the last ten years, according to data published by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service.

In the EU member states, the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) researchers has reached 1.89 million, 546 thousand more compared with 2010.

In the EU, most researchers worked in the business enterprise sector (55%) and the higher education sector (33%), followed by the government sector (11%).

The number of researchers (FTE) almost doubled in Greece and Hungary between 2010 and 2020, totalling 41 800 and 42 000 respectively last year. The same happened in Poland, where there were 124 400 FTE of these professionals in 2020, 59 900 more than in 2010.

Relatively high growth rates were also recorded in the Netherlands (89%), Malta (69%), Cyprus (67%) and Ireland (66%).

Capital Intelligence affirms Bank of Cyprus’ ratings

Capital Intelligence Ratings (CI Ratings or CI) affirmed Bank of Cyprus’ Long-Term Foreign Currency Rating (LT FCR) and Short-Term Foreign Currency (ST FCR) of Bank of Cyprus (BoC) at `BB-` and `B`, respectively.

At the same time, CI Ratings affirmed BoC`s Bank Standalone Rating (BSR) of `bb-`, Core Financial Strength (CFS) rating of `bb-`, and Extraordinary Support Level (ESL) of Uncertain. The Outlook for the LT FCR and BSR is Stable.

Increasing surveillance to address migration flows is our only choice, Interior Minister tells CNA

Cyprus Minister of the Interior, Nicos Nouris, has said that there are no magic solutions or recipes to address the issue of migration and that “we have no other choice than to increase surveillance at the Green Line, using any means required”, describing the situation at “Pournara” reception center as very difficult. Police report a total of 11 violations of COVID-19 measures in the last 24 hours

Ten citizens and one establishment owners were reported by Police for violations of COVID-19 measures during the last 24 hours after 2,471 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

The Cyprus Police Press Office told CNA that in Nicosia, from 1,330 checks there were no reports while in Limassol after 146 checks, four citizens and one establishment owner were reported. In Larnaka the Police conducted 455 checks and two citizen were fined and in Famagusta in 347 checks, 2 citizens were fined.

Europe continues to be in the deep red on ECDC map on COVID-19 epidemiological situation

The epidemiological situation in the European Union and the European Economic Area remains serious and has not significantly changed, according to the latest epidemiological map on the spread of COVID-19 by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Most regions and countries in Europe are now in the deep red or red category. The only regions where the situation is relatively better are located in Italy and Romania.
