Both sides in Cyprus give positive response for a UN reception with Anastasiades’ and Tatar’s participation

Both sides in Cyprus have given a positive response to the UN as regards the latter`s intention to organize a reception at Ledra Palace, on December 14, at 1900, with the participation of Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, on the occasion of the arrival in Cyprus of Colin Stewart, who has assumed his duties as the UNSG`s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force on the island (UNFICYP).

“We confirm that we have responded positively to the UN about holding this reception, in which we are ready to participate,” Cyprus Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, told CNA, adding that the issue is expected to be discussed during a meeting which President Anastasiades will have on Friday, December 10, at 0900, with Stewart at the Presidential Palace.

Cyprus issue and immigration on the agenda of President Anastasiades visit to Spain

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades departs for Madrid on Wednesday for meetings with the country’s monarch and the Prime Minister.

On Thursday, Anastasiades will meet in the morning with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the Moncloa Palace where the two will examine issues pertaining to the European agenda, developments on the Cyprus problem and the Turkish provocations in Cyprus’ EEZ, the immigration issue as well as efforts to manage the pandemic, regional developments, Southern neighborhood policy, and western Balkan issues.

A joint statement will be issued at the end of the talks.

Draft options paper on Varosha on COREPER’s agenda ahead of discussion in Foreign Affairs Council

The latest draft of the EU’s options paper on possible responses to Turkey’s and the Turkish Cypriot leadership’s actions regarding the fenced off area of Varosha is scheduled to be discussed by the permanent representatives of the member states during their COREPER meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

The draft will be discussed as part of the preparation of the next meeting of the EU’s Foreign Ministers at the next Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), which will be held in Brussels on Monday December 13th.

According to CNA sources, the third draft which has already been shared with the member states, includes options such as targeted legal measures on persons responsible for actions taken in Varosha, cuts in funds for Turkey from the European Investment Bank as well as in pre-accession funds, as well as the freezing of EU – Turkey high level contacts.

Three more COVID-19 patients have died, 576 new cases have been traced, Health Ministry says on Wednesday

Three more persons died of COVID-19 and 576 new cases have been traced, Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Wednesday. The positivity rate stands at 0.7%.

The total number of deaths is now 605 and of cases 138,733.

A total of 128 COVID-19 patients are being treated, of whom 43 in a critical condition. A percentage of 76.57% of those hospitalized have not been vaccinated.

Six post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in an Intensive Treatment Unit in a critical condition and are intubated.

A total of 82,025 tests were carried out using the PCR method (7,562) and antigen rapid tests (74,463).

Greek Prime Minister welcomes Russia’s clear position on the Cyprus issue

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed Russia`s clear position on the Cyprus issue during his joint statements with Russian President Vladimir Putin after their meeting on Wednesday in Sochi.

Mitsotakis said that Russia`s position on the Cyprus issue is “consistent and constructive”, noting that the Cyprus issue constitutes “an issue of the highest priority for Greece”.

“I reiterated our position on the need for a viable solution within the framework of the Security Council resolutions” which “will be based on the logic of one bizonal bicommunal federation with one legal personality and one citizenship”, Greek Prime Minister said.

Motor vehicles sales drop by an annual 9.4% in January-November 2021

Total motor vehicles sales for the period of January – November 2021 declined by 9.4% year on year with vehicles sales registrations in November dropping by 38.1%, figures released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus show.

According to Cystat, total motor vehicles sales for January – November 2021 dropped to 32,698 compared to 36,079 in the respective period of last year.

Passenger saloon cars decreased to 25,067 from 28,000 in January- November 2020, recording a decrease of 10,5%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 10,117 or 40.4% were new and 14,950 or 59.6% were used cars, Cystat added.

During January – November 2021 total registration of new vehicles rose by 9.6% year on year, while used vehicles sales dropped by an annual 21.3%.
