Yellow Warning to Be Issued as Cyprus Faces New Year Coastal Storms

Nicosia: A yellow warning is expected to be issued by the Cyprus Meteorological Service as the island is ushering in the New Year. Coastal storms are anticipated on New Year's Eve, but improved conditions are forecast for the first day of the new year, as Met Officer Andreas Hadjigeorgiou informed.

According to Cyprus News Agency, isolated storms are expected Tuesday evening and will continue until the afternoon of December 31. Hadjigeorgiou clarified that on the evening of New Year's Eve, the southeastern coast will not be significantly affected by rain and storms. The meteorological service may issue a yellow warning for strong storms, primarily along the coast, effective from Tuesday night until Wednesday afternoon.

Hadjigeorgiou mentioned that the weather will remain mainly clear until Sunday. However, sleet or snow is anticipated in the mountains on Tuesday and Wednesday, with hail being a possibility in storm-affected areas, as stated by CyMet.

Strong coastal winds are expected on Tuesday, with temperatures rising between 14 to 15 degrees. A temporary drop of 2- to 3-degrees is possible on Friday. On the coasts, temperatures are expected to be between 15 to 16 degrees, which are typical for the season.

In the evenings, temperatures will decrease to 4 degrees inland, 6 degrees on the coast, and zero degrees in the higher mountains, except on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Regarding recent snowfall, Hadjigeorgiou explained that it was light, causing the snow to melt at first light.
