Limassol: The UN Secretary-General has clearly stated his commitment to not engaging in any initiatives that fall outside the framework of the United Nations Charter, as conveyed by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. He emphasized this position while addressing the media at the graduation ceremony for doctoral students at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in Limassol, following Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's remarks supporting a two-state solution during his meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Mara ngela Holgun.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides shared that he had been in communication with Holgun and was briefed on her discussions with Fidan, though he opted not to disclose the details publicly. He reiterated the Secretary-General's stance to Turkish President and EU institution heads, underscoring the importance of adhering to the UN Charter, especially in today's context where international law is being challenged.
President Christodoulides acknowledged the significance of Fidan's public statements but reiterated that the UN's initiative remains focused on the outlined direction by the Secretary-General. He highlighted that ultimately, the positions and final outcomes would be the basis for judgment.
In response to questions about Fidan's remarks potentially being aimed at domestic or public consumption, President Christodoulides maintained his stance of not underestimating or downplaying them. Holgun, who was recently in Cyprus, continues her diplomatic efforts with visits to Ankara and Athens in preparation for a broader meeting on Cyprus.
The ongoing division of Cyprus since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third, has seen numerous UN-led peace talks fail, primarily due to Turkish resistance. Recent efforts by the Secretary-General in 2025 included informal meetings in Geneva, New York, and with Cyprus leaders, with further discussions yet to be announced. Holgun's role as the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus is pivotal in engaging the involved parties towards a resolution.
