President: Our sole objective is the resumption of negotiations and Cyprus’ reunification

The only goal and sole objective is to resume negotiations soon and achieve the much desired liberation and reunification of Cyprus, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Sunday, speaking at a memorial service for two heroes of the 1955-1959 liberation struggle in Limassol.

President Christodoulides said that half a century after the tragic events of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, “we are facing a critical moment for our national issue”, noting that “despite the difficult circumstances and the deadlock during recent years, we have managed to stimulate the interest of the international community and give new perspectives”.

At the same time, he underlined that the sole goal and aspiration is to resume negotiations soon and achieve the much desired goal of the liberation and reunification of Cyprus.

He said that after “our persistent and concerted efforts, through an assertive realism and by demonstrating in practice our political will, we are now, after several years, before a new
momentum”.

“We are well aware of our responsibilities and obligations. We are well aware of our objective. We have a plan and we will do our utmost to liberate our country,” he stated.

“Our vision is to have a new century of peace with the human rights being safeguarded for all the lawful inhabitants of our country, a new era without the barbed wire of occupation, without guarantees, without dividing lines, without hatred and enmity,” President Christodoulides concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
