President Acknowledges Australia’s Support on Cyprus Issue During High Commissioner’s Credential Presentation

Nicosia: Cyprus expresses profound appreciation to Australia's principled stance on the Cyprus Question and its enduring support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, said President Nikos Christodoulides during the presentation of credentials by the new High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Cyprus, Emily Louise Pugin.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the long-standing ties of friendship between Cyprus and Australia, which are grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to international law. He praised Australia for its decades-long contribution to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, which he described as a clear expression of Australia's commitment to upholding international peace and security.

The President highlighted the close ties between the peoples of the two nations, particularly the vibrant Cypriot community in Australia, which serves as a central pillar of the bilateral relationship. He stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, and education, while welcoming potential opportunities arising from the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement.

Christodoulides also acknowledged Australia's practical cooperation with Cyprus in evacuation planning and operations, as well as its trust in Cyprus as a reliable partner during regional contingencies. He commended the smooth collaboration regarding halloumi imports, which reflects the strong working relationship between the two countries.

At a multilateral level, President Christodoulides noted the positive record of cooperation and mutual support within international organizations and expressed Cyprus's commitment to further strengthening this partnership. He conveyed warm greetings to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the people of Australia, wishing the new High Commissioner a successful tenure.

High Commissioner Emily Louise Pugin, in her response, echoed the strong bonds of history and fellowship between the two nations. She highlighted the significant contributions of the Cypriot diaspora to Australia's multicultural society and reiterated Australia's commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

Pugin expressed gratitude to Cyprus for its support during periods of regional instability and emphasized the importance of international law, stability, and open markets for both island nations. She voiced optimism about strengthening the economic and strategic partnership through the Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement.

Pugin concluded by expressing her honor to serve as Australia's High Commissioner to Cyprus, pledging to be a steadfast friend and representative of her country, while looking forward to deepening the bonds between the nations and their people.

Cyprus has faced division since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated UN-led peace talks have not yet resolved the situation, with the latest round in 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without conclusion.
