Nicosia: Greece will immediately deploy two frigates and two F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus, as announced by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. The decision comes in response to perceived threats and is aimed at bolstering Cyprus's defense capabilities.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the deployment was decided by the Governmental Council for National Security (KYSEA). The frigate Kimon, along with a second frigate equipped with the Centaur system, will be sent to Cyprus. This move follows unprovoked attacks on Cypriot territory, prompting Greece to assure its full support to Cyprus. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been in contact with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, and Defense Minister Dendias has been coordinating with his Cypriot counterpart, Vasilis Palmas.
Minister Dendias also announced plans to travel to Cyprus with General Choupis, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff. Their visit aims to facilitate better coordination with Cypriot officials, including consultations with President Christodoulides and Defense Minister Palmas.
The Republic of Cyprus has expressed gratitude for Greece's support. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis conveyed appreciation for the deployment of Greek frigates and fighter jets. This strategic action is part of enhanced preventive measures agreed upon in response to regional developments, further strengthening the cooperation between Cyprus and Greece.
