FM Emphasizes EU Tools to Prevent Iran Escalation at Foreign Affairs Council

Brussels: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, highlighted the importance of utilizing EU mechanisms comprehensively to prevent further escalation and to uphold human rights in Iran, during discussions with his EU counterparts in Brussels on Thursday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) addressed several pressing issues, including Russian aggression against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and the situation in the African Great Lakes region. During a working breakfast session, ministers assessed geopolitical developments and discussed the trajectory of EU foreign policy for 2026. Foreign Minister Kombos presented the priorities of the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, focusing on strengthening external relations.

In discussions concerning Ukraine, Kombos articulated Cyprus' readiness to facilitate the adoption of the twentieth sanctions package and to bolster support for Ukraine across various sectors. He emphasized the urgent need for EU assistance to safeguard critical infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector.

Regarding the Middle East, as per the press release, Kombos expressed Cyprus' full support for efforts aimed at stabilizing and reconstructing Gaza, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2803. He stressed the necessity for the EU to play a significant role in collaboration with the United States and Arab partners. Cyprus, he noted, would continue to provide active contributions through humanitarian aid, the maritime corridor, and training activities with EU missions.

Addressing developments in Iran, Kombos voiced serious concerns over the deteriorating internal conditions and condemned the loss of life. He stressed the need for a comprehensive application of EU tools to prevent further escalation and to uphold human rights based on universal principles.

On Syria, Kombos advocated for the full implementation of ceasefire agreements as the sole viable approach to maintaining the country's unity and safeguarding the rights of all communities, contributing to regional stability and security.

The Council also featured discussions with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Trk. Kombos reaffirmed the Republic of Cyprus's steadfast commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, reflecting its role as a member of the Human Rights Council.
