Teacher Training Emphasized at EU Education Ministers’ Meeting in Nicosia

Nicosia: Teacher training and educational priorities are the central topics of discussion at the two-day informal meeting of EU Education Ministers, hosted by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU at the Philoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the discussions are focusing on two major themes. Athena Michaelidou, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, highlighted the importance of teacher training and professional development, particularly in relation to cultivating teachers' skills and integrating Artificial Intelligence into education. The second theme addresses the educational priorities within the European Semester, aiming to enhance their visibility and respect the responsibilities of each member state.

Sofia Zacharaki, the Greek Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, emphasized the critical nature of current educational challenges, expressing confidence that the Cyprus Presidency will offer solutions. She noted her role in chairing a workshop on teacher education and professional development, underscoring the continuous and field-driven training necessary for teachers.

Ronald Ozols, the Latvian Minister of Education, stressed the significance of today's discussions for Latvia, focusing on the crucial role of teachers and the impact of digital technologies and AI in education. He pointed out the challenges related to recruiting and retaining teachers, emphasizing professional support as a priority.

Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, Director General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture at the European Commission, praised the Cyprus Presidency for initiating vital discussions on enhancing the teaching profession. She mentioned the upcoming presentation of a teacher's agenda as part of an education package, highlighting the importance of investing in education and training to maintain a strong and competitive European Union.
