Brussels: The European Commission has announced the introduction of the first European Asylum and Migration Management Strategy, a landmark initiative aimed at setting the European Union's political objectives on asylum and migration. This comprehensive strategy is designed to guide the EU's efforts over the next five years as it seeks to manage migration in a fair and effective manner.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Strategy marks a significant shift in the EU's approach to migration and asylum, building on prior progress in securing external borders and engaging in assertive migration diplomacy. It aims to consolidate these efforts while maintaining European values, with a focus on preventing illegal migration and dismantling criminal smuggling networks. The strategy also emphasizes the importance of protecting individuals fleeing war and persecution, while attracting talent to bolster the EU's economic competitiveness.
Key priorities outlined in the Strategy include enhancing migration diplomacy, strengthening EU border security, and implementing a firm and adaptable asylum and migration system. The Strategy also plans for more effective return and readmission processes and aims to leverage labour and talent mobility to address skills shortages in key sectors.
The European Commission's Strategy intends to utilize digitalization and artificial intelligence to improve asylum and migration management. This includes the establishment of a Forum on AI in migration to provide Member States with advanced tools for decision-making and security enhancement. The Commission has proposed allocating at least £81 billion to support home affairs policies and international partnerships, aligning with the EU's strategic interests, including migration.
The Strategy reflects input from the European Parliament, Member States, and various stakeholders, including EU Agencies. It aligns with the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation, which mandates Member States to develop national strategies for effective management systems. The Commission's Strategy aims to ensure the consistent implementation of these national strategies at the Union level.
