European Commission’s 2025 Digital Decade Report Calls for Enhanced Digital Transformation Efforts

Brussels: The European Commission’s State of the Digital Decade 2025 report has evaluated the EU’s progress in its digital transformation goals, identifying achievements and areas needing improvement in digital infrastructure, business digitalisation, digital skills, and public service digitalisation.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the report highlights that while there have been advancements, the deployment of connectivity infrastructure like fibre and 5G networks is still behind schedule. Adoption of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, cloud, and big data by companies is increasing but needs to hasten. Only 55.6% of Europeans have basic digital skills, and the supply of ICT specialists with advanced skills remains low, with a significant gender gap impacting sectors like cybersecurity and AI.

The report also addresses ongoing challenges including fragmented markets, complex regulations, security issues, and strategic dependence. The necessity for increased public and private investment and improved access to venture capital for EU companies is emphasized to spur innovation and growth. The Member States are set to review the Commission’s recommendations and will deliberate with the Commission on future steps. In 2026, there will be a reassessment of the Digital Decade Policy Programme’s targets to ensure they align with the evolving digital landscape and the EU’s strategic objectives.
