India Reaffirms Support for Cyprus Sovereignty Amidst Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Nicosia: India reiterates its unwavering and consistent support for the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Republic of Cyprus, a Joint Declaration issued in the framework of the official visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus says.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Joint Declaration on the Implementation of the Comprehensive Partnership between the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of India highlights the visit of India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, to Cyprus from June 15 to 16, 2025. This visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades, marks a historic milestone in the deep and enduring friendship between the two nations. The Declaration celebrates a forward-looking partnership rooted in a joint strategic vision and mutual trust and respect.

The Declaration further states that Cyprus and India expressed strong commitment to resuming UN-facilitated efforts for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus Question. This is to be achieved on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with the agreed UN framework and relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions. Both sides emphasized the need to avoid unilateral actions to create a conducive environment for meaningful negotiations.

Additionally, the leaders reaffirmed their support for a rules-based international order grounded in the UN Charter and international law, with particular emphasis on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The discussions also covered international issues, including the Middle East situation and the war in Ukraine, with a focus on upholding the global non-proliferation architecture and India’s potential inclusion in the Nuclear Suppliers group.

The two leaders expressed intent to strengthen coordination within international organizations, including the United Nations and the Commonwealth. They discussed the need for United Nations Security Council reform, aiming for a more effective and representative body that addresses contemporary geopolitical challenges. Cyprus reiterated support for India’s candidacy as a permanent member in an expanded United Nations Security Council.

The declaration highlighted the commitment to regular political dialogue and the use of existing bilateral mechanisms to streamline coordination and advance cooperation across sectors. Cyprus expressed solidarity with India in its fight against cross-border terrorism, condemning recent terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

In terms of defense and security cooperation, the leaders agreed to collaborate on cybersecurity and emerging technologies, and to expand maritime cooperation given both nations’ naval traditions. This includes encouraging Indian naval port calls and exploring joint maritime training and exercises.

Regarding connectivity and regional cooperation, Cyprus and India share a strategic vision of serving as bridges between regions. They underscored the significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a catalyst for regional cooperation. The leaders welcomed the prospect of Indian shipping companies establishing a presence in Cyprus to enhance maritime cooperation.

Looking ahead to Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union in early 2026, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening EU-India relations. Cyprus pledged to advance the EU-India strategic partnership and support the conclusion of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement by the end of the year.

The declaration also covers trade, innovation, technology, and economic opportunities, highlighting the commitment to expanding economic ties through increased trade, investment, and collaboration in science, innovation, and research. Both sides aim to finalize a Mobility Pilot Program Arrangement by the end of 2025 and explore tourism and direct air connectivity opportunities.

“This Joint Declaration reaffirms the strategic bond between Cyprus and India,” the Declaration concludes, expressing confidence in the flourishing partnership that promotes peace, stability, and prosperity across their regions. The leaders agreed on preparing an Action Plan to guide bilateral relations for the next five years under the supervision of their respective foreign ministries.
