Brussels: The European Commission has unveiled a series of recommendations aimed at safeguarding vulnerable consumers from disconnections due to soaring energy prices. This initiative is part of the Commission's effort to enhance consumer empowerment in the energy sector, enabling them to make informed choices about their energy supply while facilitating their engagement in the clean energy transition through self-production and sharing.
According to Cyprus News Agency, these recommendations are part of the Citizens' Energy Package and the AccelerateEU communication, targeting the ongoing fossil energy crisis. The Commission's strategy aims to foster an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable energy environment, crucial for Europe's pursuit of energy independence. The guidelines emphasize preventing energy disconnections, managing supplier bankruptcies, and promoting energy communities and self-consumption to transition towards cleaner energy and lower costs.
Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan J¸rgensen highlighted the urgency of reinforcing Europe's energy resilience in light of the Middle Eastern conflict and its impact on energy prices. He called for accelerating the shift to a sustainable, secure, and consumer-centric energy system, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable households from energy disconnections and supporting consumers in managing their energy supply contracts.
The European Commission is committed to collaborating with Member States and stakeholders to implement these recommendations effectively, offering technical assistance and monitoring progress. More information on this initiative is available online.
