New Sampling for FMD in Nicosia and Larnaca Yields Negative Results, Local Breeds Meeting Held

Nicosia: FMD laboratory results of the sampling in the units within the infected areas of Nicosia and Larnaca districts are negative, the Veterinary Services announced Thursday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, culling of animals is underway, the Services said and so far 39,810 sheep and goats and 2,247 cattle have been killed. As regards the three swine units, the Services said that the culling has been completed, and a total number of 24,483 pigs were killed.

The Veterinary Services also stated that a meeting was held today with representatives of the Agricultural Research Institute, the Department of Agriculture, and a representative from Cyprus University of Technology. The meeting was convened to discuss the issue of local breeds, specifically the red cows and fat-tailed sheep that tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease in the Larnaca district.

The participants assessed all data and will meet again for a final decision, the Vet Services said.
