Brussels: The European Commission has launched a public consultation and call for evidence to evaluate the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
According to Cyprus News Agency, this initiative marks the first step in assessing how effectively the Directive has mitigated the impact of specific plastic products on both the marine environment and human health, while fostering a circular, innovative, and sustainable economy.
The European Commission stated that four years have passed since the implementation of key bans and restrictions across the EU. As mandated by law, the Commission will conduct a thorough evaluation of the SUPD by July 2027. This evaluation aims to assess the Directive's effectiveness, efficiency, relevance, coherence, and added value within the EU. The results will inform decisions on whether new regulations are necessary.
The consultation and call for evidence are open to a broad range of stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, non-governmental organisations, public authorities, and academia. Interested parties are encouraged to share their perspectives through an online survey, which is available in the 24 official EU languages until 17 March 2026.
