EU Initiates Air Bridge to Deliver Humanitarian Aid to Darfur Amidst Escalating Crisis

Brussels: A total of eight flights are set to deliver life-saving supplies to Darfur, responding to the humanitarian crisis resulting from conflict in Sudan that has left millions in need. The first flight delivered approximately 100 tonnes of aid from EU humanitarian stockpiles and partner organizations last Friday, December 12. Further flights are scheduled to continue throughout December 2025 and January 2026.

According to Cyprus News Agency the humanitarian situation in Darfur, a region notoriously difficult for aid organizations to access, significantly worsened after the fall of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, to the Rapid Support Forces in late October. The loss of the city marked a significant escalation in the humanitarian crisis, further limiting aid access. Those civilians who managed to flee have reported widespread violations of international humanitarian law.

The Air Bridge is transporting essential supplies, including shelter materials, water, sanitation and hygiene items, as well as health provisions. The total value of this operation is £3.5 million, funded from the EU's humanitarian aid budget. The EU has directed over £270 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan this year, making it one of the largest contributors to the response and representing the bloc's most significant humanitarian effort in Africa.
