Nicosia: Cyprus' sporting sector is making steady progress, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Thursday evening in Nicosia, addressing an event held by the Cyprus Association of Olympic Games Participants (Olympians). He also proposed appointing the association's president as the President of the Republic's adviser on sport.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides expressed deep emotion and gratitude, noting that these feelings arise 'spontaneously in each and every one of us every time we find ourselves among you, the athletes of Cyprus and Greece.' He reflected on the historical connection between Cypriot and Greek sports, recalling that until 1980, Cyprus' sporting community competed under Greece's colors. This shared history, he noted, evokes intense and unique emotions, symbolized by the Cypriot and Greek flags that unite people under a shared sense of pride.
Addressing the athletes, President Christodoulides emphasized the values beyond appearances, victories, and medals. He highlighted their dedication, mental resilience, and commitment to raising the national flag high as exemplary for everyone. He underscored the government's sport-centred policy, focusing on good governance, clear rules, and accountability with 'zero tolerance for violence,' stressing that moral integrity is essential for the soul of sports. He also mentioned that athletes who secure Olympic participation are immediately included in a professional rehabilitation plan, ensuring equal rights for Olympians and Paralympians.
