Brussels: Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos emphasized the necessity for the European Union to take a leading role in Middle East developments, urging de-escalation through diplomacy and dialogue. Speaking on Monday before the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Kombos stressed that the EU is not merely a passive observer in the ongoing Middle East conflict and must ensure it spearheads efforts to address the situation.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos condemned a recent terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, labeling it a heinous act. He highlighted the unprecedented nature of current events in the region, citing their global implications. The Minister urged for maximum self-restraint and called for the EU to engage actively through an action plan to lead during these challenging times.
Kombos noted the ongoing efforts by the EU, particularly through the ‘E3 plus one’ format, involving France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. He asserted that the EU’s active role in the conflict must be prominently projected, emphasizing that the stakes are high and the EU cannot afford to be a passive entity.
Addressing the attack on the Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, Kombos expressed Cyprus’ condemnation in the strongest terms, calling the targeting of a place of worship with the intent to cause maximum casualties and instill fear unacceptable. He urged Syrian authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure the protection of Christians in Syria. The Minister extended his thoughts to the victims’ families, underscoring the need for effective security measures.
