Lefkara: The Cyprus EU Presidency will work for an 'Autonomous Union Open to the World,' President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides announced on Sunday during the presentation of the program and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). The presidency is set to commence on January 1, 2026, for a six-month term.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides, speaking at the Lefkara Conference Centre, emphasized that the Presidency will be structured around five interlinked pillars. These include autonomy through security, defence, and preparedness; autonomy through competitiveness; an autonomous Union open to the world; an autonomous Union of values for all; and a budget essential to support an autonomous EU.
The President highlighted the significance of the day as a milestone for Cyprus's present and future. He stated, "In 10 days, we take on an institutional role and a responsibility towards Europe, our fellow citizens, and our children-for the future." He also remarked that the heart of Europe beats more strongly in Cyprus, at the southeastern edge of Europe, which remains the last EU Member State still under occupation.
Christodoulides noted the symbolic importance of Lefkara for the event, describing it as a place that embodies the creativity, tradition, and enduring outward-looking character of Cyprus. Additionally, the presentation included the unveiling of the official logo of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, inspired by the art of Lefkara embroidery. The logo is composed of 27 mosaic pieces representing the Member States.
