Strasbourg: Nicos Tornaritis, head of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, was unanimously elected on Monday as one of the Assembly’s Vice-Presidents on behalf of Cyprus for the year 2025.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this is a particularly important position of great institutional and political significance for Cyprus, which confirms the active and substantial role played by the head and members of the Cypriot delegation, as well as the trust and prestige enjoyed by Cyprus within the Council of Europe.
It is added that, in his capacity as Vice-President, Tornaritis will play a key role at a particularly critical time for Europe, as he will participate in the Assembly’s Bureau, which sets the strategic direction of the Assembly, takes all key decisions concerning its functioning and coordinates all the Assembly’s activities, while supporting the President in managing and promoting the PACE’s external relations.
At the same time, as Vice-President of the Assembly, Tornaritis will act as Deputy President both at plenary sessions and at a series of official events and institutional obligations of PACE.
It is also noted that the Bureau includes, among others, the PACE President, the Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, the Presidents of the political groups, the Presidents of the PACE Committees and the head of the country holding the rotating Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
“The election of Tornaritis is recognition of his long-standing commitment, and that of the other members of the Cypriot delegation, to the values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. At the same time, it reflects Cyprus’ ongoing contribution to the institutions of the Council of Europe and further strengthens the voice of the Republic of Cyprus in European parliamentary affairs,” the statement concludes.
Moreover, in a congratulatory post on X platform today, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the unanimous election of Nicos Tornaritis as PACE Vice-President is an important institutional and political distinction for Cyprus, confirming the country’s ongoing, active and substantial role in European parliamentary affairs, as well as the trust it enjoys within the Council of Europe.
He added that the election of Tornaritis is also recognition of the long-standing commitment of both himself and the members of the Cypriot delegation to the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, while strengthening Cyprus’ position as a reliable partner in European fora.
