Coordination Center Orders Precautionary Evacuation of Omodos Amid Fire Risk

Limassol: The Crisis Management Coordination Center has instructed the preventive evacuation of the Omodos community following renewed fire threats in certain regions. Lefteris Perikli, President of the Limassol Union of Communities, clarified that while there is no immediate danger, the evacuation is a precautionary measure due to aerial surveillance indicating the potential for the fire to reignite.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Perikli expressed dissatisfaction with the annual complaints from communities being overlooked. However, he emphasized that there has been no talk of negligence or delays, urging not to undermine the services provided.

Giannakis Giannaki, President of the Community Council of Arsos, voiced suspicions of malicious intent behind the fire that began near the Malia community. He highlighted that fires had previously occurred in the area and were managed by neighboring Community Councils. The latest fire was detected last Sunday, and Giannaki suggested that the fire’s threat might have been underestimated.

The fire has primarily affected areas of wild vegetation and remains distant from the village of Arsos. As of Thursday noon, the community was without electricity, though a generator supplied by the EAC is providing power to the village center.

In the semi-mountainous area of Limassol, the community of Mandria is on standby for a potential evacuation, according to Renos Moyseos, President of the Community Council. Moyseos stated that the village was not in immediate danger as the fire reignited north of Koilani, at the top of Afami hill. Aircraft are being deployed to contain the fire, with a favorable wind at midday helping to prevent the fire from advancing towards Mandria.
